Reading Junction to Wilmington Junction

From the crossovers and junction at Reading Junction (MP 1.8), where the two tracks of the Eastern Main Line, heading northeast, separate from the single track of the Western Main Line, heading north, the latter, CTC, speed limit 60 mph for passenger trains and 40 mph for freight trains, passes the 914 ft. siding at CP-Foley Street (MP 2.2), the bridge over the Mystic River (MP 2.61), speed restriction 50/30, Medford Junction (MP 3.1), where the former Guilford Medford Running Track heads away northwest (on the west side) and the line turns just east of due north, Edgewood, and the passenger station at Malden (MP 4.5), freight speed restriction 10 mph, where the line turns curvily north.

There is a curve with speed restriction 45/10 at the west end of the passenger station at Oak Grove (MP 5.3), the interlocking at Fells (MP 5.7), where single track, CTC, becomes double track, current-of-traffic (Rule 251), Automatic Block Signals, the passenger station at Wyoming (MP 6.2), a speed restriction of 30 mph on Track 1 between the grade crossing at West Wyoming Avenue (MP 6.2) and the grade crossing at West Foster Street (MP 6.3), a speed restriction of 30 mph on Track 2 between the grade crossing at West Foster Street (MP 6.3) and the grade crossing at West Emerson Street (MP 6.7), the passenger station at Melrose (MP 6.7), Highlands Crossover (MP 7.3), the grade crossing at Franklin Street (MP 7.5), and the passenger station at Melrose Highlands (MP 7.5).

The line turns just west of due north past the grade crossing at Greenwood Street (MP 8.4), the passenger station at Greenwood (MP 8.5), the grade crossing at Forest Street (MP 8.5), and Wakefield Junction Crossover (MP 9.4, where the former Guilford Newburyport Running Track departs northeast and the line turns north-northwest, a 30 mph speed restriction on Track 2 between the grade crossing at Broadway Street (MP 9.4) and the grade crossing at Albion Street (MP 9.8), a speed restriction of 15/10 between the grade crossing at Albion Street (MP 9.8) and the grade crossing at Chestnut Street (MP 9.9), and the passenger station at Wakefield (MP 9.9).

There is a 30 mph speed restriction on Track 1 between the grade crossing at Chestnut Street (MP 9.9) and the grade crossing at Prospect Street (MP 10.0), a 30 mph speed restriction on Track 2 between the grade crossing at Town Crossing (MP 11.4) and the grade crossing at Ash Street Crossing (MP 11.0), Ash Street (MP 11.7), where the double track ends, and the single track Ash Street Running Track begins, with a 15/10 speed restriction on the spring switch from Track 1, the grade crossing at Main Street (MP 11.8), the grade crossing at Washington Street (MP 11.9), the passenger station at Reading (MP 12.0), with a pedestrian crossing, and the grade crossing at Woburn Street (MP 12.1), where the Ash Street Running Track ends and  single track CTC begins.

The line continues north-northwest, past the grade crossing at Willow Street (MP 13.0), the grade crossing at Kilmarnock Road (MP 14.3), the grade crossing at Woburn Street (MP 14.9), the grade crossing at Concord Street (MP 15.5), the grade crossing at Middlesex Street (MP 16.3), the passenger station at North Wilmington (MP 16.3), and the grade crossing at Salem Street (MP 16.9), to Wilmington Junction (CPW-WJ, MP 17.92), where the Wildcat Branch trails into the west side of the MBTA Western Main Line and a freight line between Lowell and Salem once crossed east-west.
