Reading Junction to Beverly Junction

Fromthe crossovers and junction at Reading Junction (MP 1.8), where the two tracks of the Eastern Main Line, heading northeast, separate from the single track of the Western Main Line, heading north, the former, Two Main Tracks, CTC, maximum speed 50 mph for passenger trains, and 40 mph for freights, passes a bridge over the Mystic River, a grade crossing at Monsanto (MP2.6), and the junction with the PanAm Saugus Branch, turning north at Everett Junction (MP 2.8), where the line becomes double track, current-of-traffic (Rule 251) and turns east-southeast, past a grade crossing at Second Street (MP 3.8), a spur off Track 2 for Kyanize Paint (MP 3.8), East Everett (MP 3.8), start of a 35 mph speed restriction to Chelsea, a grade crossing at West Third Street (MP 4.0), a grade crossing at Everett Avenue (MP 4.3), a grade crossing at Spruce Street (MP 4.4), a grade crossing at Arlington & 6th Streets (MP 4.5), the passenger station at Chelsea (MP 4.6), where the maximum speed rises to 60/40, and a connection on Track 1 with the former Conrail East Boston branch at MP 4.7.

The line turns northeast, past a 30 mph speed restriction at the grade crossing at Eastern Avenue (MP 5.5), a bridge over an inlet, a connection off Track 1 with the East Boston Branch at Revere (MP 6.5), where it turns north-northeast, past crossovers at Wonderland (MP 7.0), where Two Main Tracks, CTC, resume, a grade crossing at Oak Island (MP 8.0), the movable bridge over an inlet at Saugus Draw (MP 9.6), a spur off Track 1 to General Electric (MP 9.7), a spur off Track 2 to Bennett Street Yard (MP 9.8), a grade crossing at General Electric (MP 9.9), the passenger station at River Works (MP 9.9), a bridge over an inlet, the junction with the PanAm Saugus Branch trailing in from the west at West Lynn (MP 10.6), where it turns northeast, past crossovers at Brickyard (MP 10.8), a spur off Track 1 to U.WS. Plastics (MP 11.1), and the passenger station at Central Square, Lynn (MP 11.5), where the line turns east-northeast.

There is a spur off Track 1 to Vlahos Brothers (MP 11.6), a spur off Track 2 to Nissen's (MP 12.2), the passenger station at Swampscott (MP 12.8), where an erstwhile line to Marblehead once continued east-northeast and the line turns north-northeast, past crossovers at Castle Hill (MP 15.1), north past a spur off Track 1 to California Oil (MP 15.8), McNall (MP 16.3), where the line becomes single track, CTC (with a 40/25 speed restriction on the switch), for the passage through Salem Tunnel, which has a 40/25 speed restriction, the passenger station at Salem (MP 16.8), which has a 40/25 speed restriction, the junction with the PanAm Danvers Branch, trailing in from the west at Northey Point (MP 17.0), where the line becomes double track, current-of-traffic (Rule 251), and the movable bridge over an inlet at Beverly Draw (MP 17.7), with a 50/25 speed restriction on Track 2, turning northeast past a grade crossing at Congress Street (MP 17.9), where a 40 mph speed restriction on Track 2 starts, and the passenger station at Beverly (MP 18.3), to the junction with the Gloucester Branch heading east at Beverly Junction (MP 18.7), where the Ipswich line turns north.
