Cragin to Franklin Park

From the crossovers at Cragin (MP 7.0), west of the Metra station there, the Milwaukee West line heads to the west, Three Main Tracks, ABS, overall speed limit 70 mph for passenger trains and 40 mph for others, past a signal bridge at the west end of the crossovers, a bridge over a north-south street, the Metra station with two side platforms at Hanson Park (MP 7.7), a road bridge overhead, the five-track Galewood Yard alongside to the south, a bridge over a north-south street, a signal bridge at the west end of the yard, crossovers, a signal bridge, a grade crossing with a north-south street at the east end of the two curved side platforms, with a shelter on each platform, at the Metra station at Galewood (MP 8.6), located on a 3-degree curve to the northwest (speed limit 55 mph for passenger trains), and a rail-served industry (looks like a power station) on the south side of the line.

There is a spur that used to go to Dunning, heading north on the north side of the line, the two side platforms of the Metra station at Mars (MP 9.1), adjacent to the eponymous chocolate factory (on the south side of the line), a grade crossing at the west end of the platforms, a bridge over a footpath, a grade crossing with a north-south street at the east end of the two side platforms, with a shelter on each platform, at the Metra station at Mont Clare (MP 9.5), with parking on the north side, and a grade crossing at the west end of the platforms, three grade crossings over north-south streets, a signal bridge, a grade crossing with a north-south street at the east end of the two side platforms, with a shelter on each platform, at the Metra station at Elmwood Park (MP 10.2), a pedestrian crossing at the west end of the platforms,  as the line edges west-northwest, an acute angle grade crossing with an east-west street, two signal bridges surrounding MP 11, a cemetery on the north side, and a grade crossing with a north-south street at the east end of the north side (with shelter) and center island platforms at the Metra station at River Grove (MP 11.4).

The line then edges west, as houses give way to woods on the south side, across the through girder bridge over the Des Plaines River, past a grade crossing with a north-south street, a signal bridge, crossovers, a signal bridge a grade crossing over a north-south street, and the lines curving away on the north side to join the single track CN (former Wisconsin Central) line that crosses on the flat, south-north, at Tower B12 (MP 12.7). Track 1 is restricted to 40 mph for eastward movements between MP 12 and MP 10, while track 3 is restricted to 25 mph between Tower A5 and Tower B12. At Tower B12, trains are limited to 45-30 across the CN crossing. West of the flat crossing, two tracks from the IHB to the south (alongside the CN) curve around to the west (in a reconfiguration from December 11, 2006) to trail into track 3 at the east end of the yard lead on the south side of the line, with speed limit 15 mph on the connection to track 3.

The Three Main Tracks now head west-northwest, past a grade crossing with a north-south street at the east end of the north side and center island platforms at the Metra station at Franklin Park (MP 13.2), where the depot is on the north side and there are still freight connector tracks on the south side, a grade crossing at the west end of the station, and crossovers.
