Mayfair to Des Plaines

From the speed restriction dropping to 35/30 for straight trains and those going from track 3 to track 2, and 30/10 for those going between track 2 and track 1 on the crossovers at Mayfair (MP 7.8), where a former C&NW line from 40th Street Yard and Cragin trails in on the south side, and a higher speed restriction of 45/30 between MP 7.6 and MP 7.8, as the line bridges over West Montrose Avenue, and a spur to Peterson Avenue turns away north-northeast just east of the flat crossing with the double-track Milwaukee North line, the main line continues northwest, Three Main Tracks, current-of-traffic, Automatic Block Signals, Automatic Train Stop, with overall speed limit 70 mph for passenger trains and 60 mph for freights, past a bridge over North Cicero Avenue (SR 50), immediately west of the flat crossing,  running along the south side of I-90/94, with the CTA airport line in the median, for a while, with North Avondale Avenue once again alongside to the southwest, a bridge over the divided West Lawrence Avenue, and a bridge over West Ainslie Street as North Avondale Avenue ends.

There is a Metra station at Jefferson Park (MP 9.1), with a center island plus northeast side platforms, a northeast side depot, and direct interchange with tthe CTA in the expressway median, immediately after which the I-90/94 angles west, and the line crosses it and continues northwest, now along the north side of the expressway, through suburbs filled with apartment blocks, past an angled bridge over North Milwaukee Avenue, which bridges over the expressway, a bridge over North Central Avenue, which bridges over the expressway, a bridge over West Gettysburg Street, which bridges over the expressway, the Metra station at Gladstone Park (MP 10.1), with east platform and depot at the stub end of North Austin Avenue, center island, and pedestrian subway that becomes a footbridge, which bridges over the expressway, I-90/94 turning away west, a grade crossing with West Bryn Mawr Avenue, a new segment of North Avondale Avenue alongside to the southwest, a spur heading away on the northeast side, a grade crossing with North Nagle Avenue, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge, the Metra station at Norwood Park (MP 11.4), with center island and northeast side platforms, a grade crossing with North Nina Avenue, a grade crossing with North Nickerson Avenue, a grade crossing with North Harlem Avenue (SR 43), a grade crossing with West Devon Avenue, a bridge over a culvert, Intermediate Signals (MP 12.2) on a signal bridge, a grade crossing with North Oliphant Avenue,  and the Metra station at Edison Park (MP 12.6), with center island and northeast platforms, and depot to the northeast.

There is a grade crossing at North Ozark Avenue, Avondale Avenue alongside to the southwest and Summit Avenue alongside to the northeast, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge, a speed restriction of 55/40 on Tracks 2 & 3 at MP 13.2, a grade crossing with Prospect Avenue, the Metra station at  Park Ridge (MP 13.5), with center island and northeast side platforms, northeast side depot, Main Street alongside to the southwest, a bridge over West Touhy Avenue (SR 72), where the street on the southwest side ends, a grade crossing with North Greenwood Avenue, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge, a grade crossing with North Dee Road, the Metra station at Dee Road (MP 15.0), with center island and northeast side platforms, and depot to the northeast, with a short section of Avondale Avenue alongside to the southwest, a grade crossing with Oakton Street, a park on the southwest side, Busse Highway alongside to the northeast, the wide road bridge over the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) overhead, woods on the southwest side, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge, Chicago Avenue alongside to the southwest, a bridge over a stream, a speed restriction of 50/30 between MP 16.4 and MP 17.0 on Track 1, a through girder bridge over Chicago Avenue and the Des Plaines River, a grade crossing with South River Road, a grade crossing at Pearson Street (MP 16.64), a speed restriction of 50/30 on all tracks between MP 17.0 and MP 17.2, and a Metra station at Des Plaines (MP 17.1), with center island and northeast side platform and depot.

There is a grade crossing at Graceland Avenue, Northwest Highway (US 14) alongside to the northeast, a speed restriction of 50/30 for straight trains, and 30/25 on the crossover from track 2 to 1 and track 3 to 2  between MP 17.2 and MP 17.5, signals on a signal bridge, a speed restriction of 35/30 on the flat crossing with the single-track Wisconsin Central (former Soo, later CN), where the Metra North Central trains run, at MP 17.5, and Deval (MP 17.7), where there is a flat crossing with a double-track former C&NW freight line, with a north quadrant connector trailing in, and a connector on the south side heading away, west of the flat crossing (with a west-facing connector trailing in further west). Deval Tower was demolished on November 26, 2012, after being out of service for fiver or six years.
