There is a flat crossing with the single-track EJ&E at Spaulding (MP 32.7), with connectors in the southeast and southwest quadrants, where the line turns northwest, Two Main Tracks, CTC, with overall speed limit 70 mph for passenger trains and 40 mph for others, past yard tracks on the southwest side, west of the crossing, a grade crossing, extra track on the northeast side, MP 34, and Hammonds, where industrial spurs head away on the south side and one trails in on the north side as the line turns west.
The line then turns north-northwest, with a grade crossing with a north-south street on the curve, where a spur once turned away on the west side, past a grade crossing with a north-south street and a bridge over drainage, and drops (speed limit 55-40 on track 1 and 40 mph on track 2) to single track, ABS, just before an acute angle flat crossing with a C&NW branch at Tower B 35 (MP 35.2), past a grade crossing over an east-west street where a C&NW line comes alongside to the west.
Both lines bridge across the Fox River, on through girder bridges, past a road bridge overhead at the west end of the river bridge, after which double track, ABS, starts again (MP 35.5), with the Fox River on the east side, beyond a parking lot at the Metra station at National Street (MP 36.0), which has two side platforms, a depot to the west and parking lots both east and west. A street alongside to the east becomes a parking lot to the east, there is a grade crossing, extra track on the west side, then a yard on the west side, signals, a Metra station at Elgin (MP 36.6), with platforms on both sides, shelter to the west and depot to the east, and an east-facing stub platform and another short track on the east side, at the north end of the Metra yard.
The line turns north, with speed limit 50-40, along the west bank of the Fox River (in which there are two different "riverboats" in between fixed bridges lower than deck level), past a grade crossing with an east-west street at the north end of the platforms, a grade crossing with an east-west street, extra track on the west side, and a grade crossing with an east-west street, and then west, away from the river, past a bridge over drainage, a north-south road bridge overhead, signals at MP 38.2, a road alongside to the north, MP 39, extra track on the south side, a grade crossing with a north-south street, signals, crossovers, signals, and MP 39.5, to the Metra station (two side platforms, unused depot on the north side, parking lot to the north) at Big Timber Road (MP 39.8), end of Metra service on this line, which continues west, with a road bridge overhead to the west.
