Jefferson City to Iron Mountain Junction

From Jefferson City (MP 125.5), where there is a passenger station (platform and brick depot on the south side), the rump of a former MP line trailing in from the west (on the south side), a yard (at least three tracks), and crossovers, the Two Main Track, CTC, line, with overall speed limit 75 mph for passenger trains and 60 mph for freight trains, but local speed limit 40/35, continues generally eastward along the south bank of the Missouri River, following the curves of the riverbank, with woods and rock faces alternating on the south side, past crossovers at Moreau (CP M124, MP 124.3), where the speed limit is 65/55, a deck girder bridge over a side river, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 121.8, the river moving away on the north side, detectors at MP 120.2, where the speed limit is 70/55, Intermediate Signals at MP 118.8, a grade crossing, Osage Junction (MP 117.3), where a short section of single track, CTC, begins, with speed limit 60/55 for the through girder bridge over the Osage River.

Two Main Tracks, CTC, resumes at Bonnot Junction (MP 116.8),  with the line heading northeast for a few miles, past a dirt track grade crossing, the Missouri alongside to the north again, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, a spur at Bonnot's Mill (MP 113.1), where the speed limit has risen to full line speeds, a rock face on the south side, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a rock face to the south, detectors? at MP 113.0, Isbell, detectors at MP 109.2, rock walls with slide fences to the south (four total slide fences), a dirt road grade crossing, a slide fence to the south, a bridge over a side river, a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, St. Aubert, a slide fence to the south, the Missouri moving away to the north, two dirt track grade crossings, a slide fence to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, and crossovers at Ames (MP 102.0).

 The line resumes its generally easterly course, still along the south bank of the river, past a spur to industry on the south side at Chamois (MP 100.2), a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, fields to the north, detectors at MP 95.9, where the passenger speed limit is 65 mph, Intermediate Signals at MP 94.8, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, a road alongside to the north, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 92.8, detectors? at MP 92.2, a spur to industry on the north side, a grade crossing, two successive rock faces to the south, Morrison, Morrison Junction (CP M091, MP 90.6), where a stretch of single track, CTC, began until October 22, 2008, and the passenger speed limit is 70 mph, a bridge over a side river, a rock face to the south, a dirt track grade crossing, a rock face to the south, the Missouri returning to the north, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 88.x, a spur at Gasconade (MP 88.5), where the speed limit is 40 mph for the through girder bridge over the Gasconade River, newly expanded to double track as of October 22, 2008, and a rock face to the south at MP 87.

Two Main Tracks, CTC, once resumed (but are now continuous) at Gasconade Junction (MP 85.9), where the speed limit is 70/50, past a rock face to the south, detectors at MP 84.6, a rock face with slide fence to the south, Intermediate Signals, a road bridge overhead, a rock face to the south, a street alongside to the south, a grade crossing, the passenger station (platform and shelter to the south, stuffed-and-mounted MoPac caboose on south side of parking lot to south) at Hermann (MP 81.0), where the speed limit is 50 mph, a spur on the south side, the road alongside to the south turning away, a rock face to the south, Intermediate Signals at MP 79.6, the river turning away for a short distance, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a side river, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 74.x, Berger Station, a grade crossing, a slide fence to the south, two dirt road grade crossings, crossovers at Berger (MP 72.9), where the speed limit is 55/50, a bridge over a stream, a rock face to the south, Ettah, detectors at MP 71.0, where the speed limit is 65/60, a bridge over drainage, the river coming back to the north, a rock face to the south, Intermediate Signals at MP 67.8, a south side west-facing spur at New Haven (MP 67.3, where full line speeds prevail and the line is once again on the south bank of the river, a street alongside to the north, a rock face to the south, Intermediate Signals at MP 64.6, a bridge over a side river, Intermediate Signals at MP 62.2, a rock face to the south, Intermediate Signals at Dundee, two dirt track grade crossings, and crossovers at Pace (MP 57.7).

The line turns southeast, cutting off a bend of the river, past a bridge over a side river, Intermediate Signals at MP 55.x, a grade crossing, extra track on the south side, the river returning, Front Street alongside to the south, an old wooden freight depot to the south, stuffed-and-mounted caboose MP 1122 to the south, and the passenger station with platform and brick depot to the south (and stuffed-and-mounted MoPac caboose11122 on the south side, west of the depot) at Washington (MP 51.7), where the passenger speed limit is 70 mph and the line turns east-southeast, past a grade crossing at Lafayette Street, a road bridge overhead, a rock face to the south, detectors at MP 49.3, where the passenger speed limit is 65 mph, a bridge over a side river, a rock face to the south, crossovers at South Point (MP 46.5), where full line speeds prevail, where the line turns east and leaves the riverbank, a rock face to the south, followed by another one, a bridge over a dirt road, and a crossover at West Labadie (MP 43.7), where the passenger speed limit has dropped to 70 mph and the line to the Labadie Power Plant leaves to the east-northeast while the main line turns east-southeast.

There is a station sign at East Labadie, a rock face on the south side, the 552 ft. tunnel at Labadie (MP 42.9), a rock face on the south side, and a bridge over the single track rump of the former Rock Island line, and the line turns south past a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 41.x, detectors at MP 41.2, and a dirt road grade crossing, southeast past a south side west-facing spur at Gray Summit (MP 39.9), and a rock face on both sides, and east at the 1,580 ft. tunnel at MP 39.1, past a rock face on both sides, a road bridge overhead, a crossover at Summit (MP 37.0), a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 65.2, two grade crossings, a west-facing track crossing over to the former Frisco to the south, and extra track on the north side.

The former Frisco line comes alongside to the south at a spur at Pacific (MP 34.8), where the speed limit is 50 mph, with both lines turning northeast past a bridge over a stream, a road alongside to the north, a grade crossing just west of the former MP line's crossovers at Dozier (MP 32.3), where the speed limit is 65/55, a highway alongside to the north, detectors at MP 28.7, where a stretch with speed limit 60/55 starts, a road alongside to the south, then the BNSF line, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, a spur on the north side (a former MP routing) at Eureka (MP 27.9), where both lines turn north-northeast and begin to separate, a road bridge overhead, MP 27, a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a river, a road bridge overhead, a turn northeast, a bridge over a road, and Intermediate Signals at Boyd (MP 23.4), where the former routing rejoins.

The line turns curvily east past a grade crossing, MP 23, a bridge over a stream, crossovers at Keefer Creek (MP 20.8), a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a divided street, a bridge over a stream, and a bridge over a road, and curvily east-northeast at a spur at Valley Park (MP 18.9), where the speed limit has risen to 70/60, with the former Frisco alongside again for a short stretch, past Park (MP 18.7), a west-facing spur on the north side into the National Museum of Transportation at Barretts (MP 16.5), where full line speeds prevail, a road bridge overhead, Geyer Road (MP 14.0), a grade crossing (South Geyer Road), a street alongside to the south, two road overbridges, the passenger station (ornate depot on the north side of the line, platform to the north and between the tracks) on a curve at Kirkwood (MP 13.4), where the speed limit has dropped to 30 mph, and a street grade crossing just east of the station, all in the midst of the descent of Kirkwood Hill.

There is a grade crossing, a bridge over a street, a crossover and spur at Kirk Junction (MP 13.2), where the 2.5 mile Kirkwood Industrial Lead heads southeast, Woodlawn, a grade crossing, Oakland, a grade crossing at the detectors at MP 12.2, where the speed limit has risen to 50-40, a grade crossing, a bridge over a street, a golf course to the north, Glendale, where the line turns northeast, Algonquin, a divided street alongside to the south, a crossover at Webster (MP 10.8), where the line turns east, a grade crossing at Cherry Avenue, two more grade crossings, a spur at Webster Groves (MP 10.0), where there is an old brick depot on the south side, a bridge over a street, a grade crossing, Webster Park, where the line turns northeast again, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at MP 9.2, Tuxedo Park, with an old stone depot on the south side, a turn just south of due east, a street alongside to the south, a bridge over a stream, and a bridge over a road.

The 2 mile Lake Industrial Lead (MP 8.4) trails in from the northwest at Lake Junction (MP 8.5), where there is a spur, followed by Edgewood, a TRRA right-of-way now used for the light rail Shrewsbury line bridging overhead, a bridge over a street, a street alongside to the south, Big Bend (MP 7.6), where the line turns east-northeast, a bridge over a street intersection, crossovers at Maplewood (MP 6.9), where 2MT, CTC, end and double track, ABS, begins, an embankment, a bridge over a street, a turn east at Howard, where there was once a flat crossing and a wye on the north side with a spur north to Oakwood Avenue, a street alongside to the north, a river alongside to the south, a grade crossing, a wide road bridge overhead, four grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at MP 4.2, and a grade crossing and a road bridge overhead at the same place, and the former Frisco line approaches on the south side again, past extra track on the south side, a wide road bridge overhead, and a road bridge overhead, to Iron Mountain Junction (MP 3.6), where the speed limit is 30 mph and the passenger line from Poplar Bluff trails in on the south side and the line turn northeast.
