Roseville to Summit

From the crossovers and junction with the Montclair Line, diverging north-northwest under a road bridge, at the former passenger station (two side platforms) at Roseville Avenue (MP 9.0), the line continues west-northwest,  three tracks wide, Rule 261 on Tracks 1 and current-of-traffic (Rule 251) on Tracks 2 (eastward) and 3 (westward), Automatic Block Signals, 25 kV 60Hz AC overhead catenary, maximum speed 60 mph for passenger trains, and 35 mph for freight trains, past a road bridge overhead, a footbridge overhead, a former footbridge overhead, a footbridge overhead, a street alongside to the north, crossovers at Green (MP 9.4), former location of Grove Street station (two abandoned side platforms), a bridge over a street, a bridge over an angled street, MP 9.8, where the passenger speed limit becomes 60 mph on Track 1, 70 mph on Track 2, and 55 mph on Track 3, the passenger station (low-level island platform for Tracks 1 and 2, side for Track 3) at East Orange (MP 10.1), where the passenger speed limit becomes 70 mph on Tracks 1 & 2, and 60 mph on Track 3,  a bridge over a major highway, which then runs alongside to the south, and  three bridges over streets.

There are two former west-facing coal sidings off Track 3, the passenger station (low-level island platform for Tracks 1 and 2, low-level side platform for Track 3) at Brick Church (MP 10.6), five bridges over streets, a former west-facing coal siding off Track 3, MP 11.2, where the passenger speed limit becomes 60 mph on Tracks 1 & 2, and 50 mph on Track 3, a former west-facing coal siding off Track 3, a formerly rail-served (off Track 3) plant at Center Meat Packing, two erstwhile south-side spurs at the former Liebmann Brothers Brewery (Rheingold Beer), of which the disconnected remains of one are still visible, and the passenger station (two low-level  side platforms, depot to the south) at Orange (MP 11.4), where there was once a Team Track and a large freight yard now used for m-o-w on the south side.

The line makes a sweeping curve to the south-southwest, past MP 11.9, where the speed limit becomes 70/30 on all tracks, an angled road bridge overhead, a Maintenance-of-Way siding on the south side, a bridge over a street, the passenger station (two low-level side platforms) at Highland Avenue (MP 12.2), a bridge over a street, a street to the south, six bridges over streets, a road bridge overhead at the passenger station (two low-level side platforms) at Mountain Station (MP 13.1), a bridge over a street, a 45 mph passenger speed restriction on Track 3, from MP 13.7 to MP 14.0, the passenger station (low-level island platform with umbrella shed for Tracks 1 and 3, low-level side platform with umbrella shed for Track 2) at South Orange (MP 13.8), and three bridges over streets.

There is a single track former yard now used for maintenance-of-way on the north side, a bridge over a stream, two through-girder bridges over streets, a 50 mph passenger speed restriction on Track 3, from MP 14.9 to MP 15.4, and the passenger station (low-level island platform with umbrella shed for Tracks 1 and 3, low-level side platform for Track 2) at Maplewood (MP 15.1), a street alongside to the north, a bridge over an angled street, a golf course to the south, and a through girder bridge over a street,  with the line curving gently to the west, past MP 16.0, where the maximum passenger speed drops to 60 mph, the crossovers at MP 16.5, where Track 3 ends and Tracks 1 and 2 become Rule 261, with maximum passenger speed 50 mph on Track 1 and 45 mph on Track 2, a street to the south, the passenger station (two low-level side platforms, brick depot to the south) at Millburn (MP 16.5), MP 17.0, where the maximum speed becomes 50/25 on Track 1 and 60/25 on Track 2, two bridges over streets, Intermediate Signals at MP 17.2, a bridge over drainage, two bridges over streets,  and the passenger station (two low-level side platforms, brick depot to the south) at Short Hills (MP 17.8).

There are two bridges over streets, a bridge over a stream, a bridge over a street, a bridge over a divided highway, Intermediate Signals at MP 18.8,  a turn to the southwest, with the line climbing on an embankment or ledge, past MP 18.9, where the maximum passenger speed on Track 2 drops to 55 mph, and a bridge over an angled road, and then west again, past MP 19.4, where the maximum passenger speed drops to 45 mph, Intermediate Signals at MP 19.5, MP 19.8, where the maximum passenger speed drops to 40 mph, extra track to the south, then three extra tracks to the south, the Hill Track, used to park m-o-w equipment, to the south, a road bridge overhead at the passenger station (high-level island platform with umbrella shed between Wall Track (south side) and Track 2, high-level side side platform with umbrella shed for Track 3) at Summit (MP 20.1), a road bridge overhead as the line enters a trench with retaining walls, and the line turns southwest, past crossovers at P&D Junction and three road bridges overhead, to where the single track Gladstone Line splits away southwest, on the south side of the double track Morristown Line as the latter turns north-northeast.
