South Amboy to Red Bank

From the crossovers (10 mph) and junction with the non-electrified Amboy Secondary, heading south-southwest at Essay (MP 0.7), the NJ Coast Line turns just east of due south, double track, Rule 261, Automatic Block Signals,  AC overhead electrification, maximum speed 70 mph for passenger trains and 30 mph for freight trains, but local 35 mph restriction  to MP 1, and 30/25 thence to MP 1.56, past a road bridge overhead, an angled road bridge overhead, a road alongside to the northeast, Church (MP 1.3), where a spur heads east and Track 4 starts, Rule 261, speed restriction 25/10, the passenger station (high-level island platform with umbrella shed) at South Amboy (MP 1.4), where an erstwhile line once headed just south of due west, a closed grade crossing, a footbridge overhead, a grade crossing, a 60 mph passenger speed restriction from MP 1.56 to MP 3.2, a footbridge overhead, extra track to the southwest, more extra tracks to the southwest, ending one track at a time, an ocean inlet to the northeast, and crossovers at Rare (MP 1.8), where Track 4 ends.

There is an angled road bridge overhead,  the signaled through-truss bascule movable bridge (40 mph passenger speed restriction on the bridge) over the xxx at Morgan (MP 3.2), followed by a deck trestle over the marsh, a 60 mph passenger speed restriction from MP 3.2 to MP 6.4 as the line moves away from the ocean, a grade crossing, extra track to the southwest, serving a tank farm, and Cliffwood.

The line turns just south of due east, past a bridge over a major highway, signals and crossovers at East Matawan (MP 6.2), a 40 mph passenger speed restriction, from MP 6.4 to MP 6.8, where there was once a flat crossing with an erstwhile Jersey Central line from Freehold to Port Monmouth and Highlands, two grade crossings, the passenger station (two high-level side platforms with umbrella sheds) at Matawan (MP 6.7), a 60 mph passenger speed restriction in the woods, from MP 6.8 to MP 7.6, after which full line speeds prevail, dual angled road bridges overhead, three angled road bridge overhead, crossovers at Lloyd (MP 8.0), where the maximum speed rises to 80/30, two grade crossings, and  the passenger station (two high-level side platforms) at Hazlet (MP 8.4).

There is a grade crossing at the south end of the station, Intermediate Signals at MP 8.8, two grade crossings, a 70 mph passenger speed restriction on the curve from MP 10.2 to MP 10.5 as the line turns east-southeast, Intermediate Signals, a bridge over a road, signals, two road bridges overhead, a 70 mph passenger speed restriction on the curve from MP 12.5 to MP 12.8,  Intermediate Signals at MP 12.7, a grade crossing, the passenger station (two high-level side paltforms with umbrella sheds, parking lot at lower-level to the south) at Middletown (MP 12.8), signals, a crossing with a US Navy line north from a Naval Ammunition depot to the coast, a bridge over a road, two grade crossings, a turn southeast, a 50 mph passenger speed restriction, from MP 15.6 to MP 16.2, on a bridge (causeway) over an inlet and past two angled grade crossings, the junction at Bank (MP 15.8), where the Southern Secondary heads south and the Coast Line turns east-southeast, a 60 mph passenger speed restriction, from MP 16.2 to MP 17.4, and the passenger station (two high-level side platforms with umbrella sheds, depot to the east) at Red Bank (MP 16.4).
