West End to Ridgewood Junction

From the crossovers, road bridge overhead, and junction at West End (MP 2.2), where the non-electrified lines, heading north-northwest, split off on the north side of the electrified lines, heading west, there is a bridge over another freight connection south from the former Erie, the New York, Susquehanna & Western, and the former New York Central West Shore line, and the west leg of a wye with the non-electrified lines trails in on the north side, the non-electrified lines are single track, Rule 261, Automatic Block Signals, maximum speed 60 mph for passenger trains and 40 mph for freight trains, but local restriction 25 mph on the curve from MP 2.6 to MP 2.9, past the former split into the erstwhile former New York & Greenwood Lake (now the Boonton Line), heading northwest, and the former Lackawanna Main Line, heading north-northwest, Double Track, current-of-traffic (Rule 251), Automatic Block Signals, maximum speed 60 mph for passenger trains and 40 mph for freight trains, past a box labeled 32E on the east side (MP 3.2), the crossovers and junction at Bergen Junction (MP 3.3), where the Bergen County Line splits off on the east side and the Main Line continues, passing road ramp bridges overhead, a road to the east (connector to the tollroad) beneath the bridge carrying the Northeast Corridor overhead at (inside) the passenger station at Secaucus Transfer, which has two high-level island platforms on this level, the westerly one on the Main Line, and the easterly one on the Bergen County and Pascak Valley Lines, with a road bridge overhead, at the north end of the station, and crossovers to the north permitting connections among all the lines.

There is a signaled through-truss single track movable bridge (30/25 mph on the bridge) over the Hackensack River, with interlockings to and from single track at each end, at West Secaucus (MP 5.0), north of which Track 2 becomes Rule 261, past a road bridge overhead, across the meadowlands, past a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, extra track on the west side, curving into a gravel pit, an erstwhile connector to North Arlington, once heading away on the west side, signals, a wide road bridge overhead, extra track to the west,  the junction with a former Lackawanna freight line, coming from the south, trailing in on the west side at Kingsland Junction (MP 6.5), where Track 2 becomes current-of-traffic (Rule 251) again and the line turns north, the passenger station (two low-level side platforms) at Kingsland (MP 7.6) and the handthrow crossover at Shop (MP 7.7), a road bridge overhead, extra track to the west, trailing in, and a through girder bridge over a street.

The line turns northwest, with a 50 mph passenger speed restriction on the curve from MP 7.9 to MP 8.1, past an embankment, a street to the west, the passenger station (two low-level side platforms, brick depot to the west) at Lyndhurst (MP 8.2), two bridges over streets, a 35 mph speed restriction on the curve from MP 8.4 to MP 8.5 as the line turns north, the signaled deck girder movable bridge (35 mph on the bridge) over the Passaic River at Lyndhurst Drawbridge (MP 8.5), a bridge over a highway on the north bank, extra track to the west, a road bridge overhead, the passenger station (two low-level side platforms) at Delawanna (MP 9.3), a bridge over a street at an intersection, Intermediate Signals at MP 9.5, two bridges over roads, extra track to the west ends, Intermediate Signals, the passenger station (two low-level side platforms, brick depot to the west) at Passaic (MP 10.6).

There is a turn northwest, with a 50 mph passenger speed restriction on Track 1, from MP 10.6 to MP 10.9, past a bridge over a street at an intersection, a signal bridge, a road bridge overhead, crossovers, a signal bridge, Intermediate Signals (MP 12.1), a bridge over a street at the south end of the passenger station (two low-level side platforms, brick depot to the west) at Clifton (MP 12.2), a bridge over a street, an embankment, Intermediate Signals, a road bridge overhead, detectors at MP 12.9, extra track to the west, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals, a spur into an industry to the west, a road bridge overhead, an embankment, a through girder bridge over a street, signals, a through girder bridge over a street, a curve further west, an angled road bridge overhead, a bridge over an angled street, and the junction with a former Erie line (later the Newark Industrial Track), trailing in from the south on the west side at Paterson Junction (MP 13.6), where there was once a flat crossing between the Lackawanna Main Line (which this route has used since Hoboken) and the former Erie, with the erstwhile Lackawanna Main Line once continuing ahead (to Mountain View).

Today's NJT Main Line turns onto the single track, Rule 261, former Erie line to head north, with a 40/25 mph speed restriction from MP 13.6 to MP 14.8, past a location where the erstwhile former Erie main line once trailed in on the east side, South Paterson (MP 14.4), where the line turns just east of due north, and the Getty Avenue Bridge (MP 14.8), a 25 mph speed restriction from MP 14.8 to MP 15.0.

Double Track, current-of-traffic (Rule 251), resumes at the crossovers at XW (MP 15.0), with extra track and an old tower to the west, a 45/30 mph speed restriction on Track 1 and 30 mph on Track 2, from MP 15.0 to MP 15.4 and a 40 mph passenger speed restriction, from MP 15.4 to MP 16.2, past the passenger station (high-level platform with umbrella shed) at Paterson (MP 15.6), two bridges over street intersections, an embankment, five through girder bridges over streets, a 50 mph passenger speed restriction, from MP 16.2 to MP 16.6, a bridge over a street intersection, two bridges over streets, a street to the west,  and the handthrow crossover at Waite Street (MP 16.9), turning north past a grade crossing, extra track to the west, a through-truss bridge over the Passaic River, two extra tracks to the west, a spur trailing in to the west, a bridge over a street with a road bridge overhead at the same place, a 40 mph passenger speed restriction on the curve, from MP 17.4 to MP 17.5, and the passenger station (two low-level side platforms) at Hawthorne (MP 17.7), where there is a connector on the west side leading up to the New York, Susquehanna & Western line that then bridges overhead.

There is a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals, a wide road bridge overhead, a curve just west of due north, Intermediate Signals (MP 19.3), and then just north-northeast, past the passenger station (two low-level side platforms, brick depot to the west) on the Main Line at Glen Rock (MP 19.4), a 45 mph passenger speed restriction on the curve from MP 19.9 to MP 20.1, a bridge over a street right at the junction, and the junction with the Bergen County Line, trailing in on the east side at Ridgewood Junction (MP 20.2).
