Charleston to Yemassee

From the passenger station, with brick depot and platform with umbrella shed to the east, just north of the Intermediate Signals at North Charleston (MP 387.7), and a road bridge overhead, the double track, CTC, line turns west-southwest at a wye at Ashley Junction (MP 388.1), adjacent to the CSX Intermodal Yard (dead ahead), leaving Charleston itself several miles off to the south, with overall speed limit 79 mph for passenger trains, 70 mph for intermodal trains, and 60 mph for freight trains, but local speed restrictions on the curve of 20 mph on the east track and 30 mph on the west track between Ashley Junction and SY (formerly Tower) (MP 388.4), west apex of the wye with a signal bridge to its north, where an NS line crosses on the flat with a connector in the southwest quadrant, rising to 50 mph at the latter, past crossovers, six to eight yard tracks on the east side, extra track on the west side to a cement plant, the 10,976 ft. south/'east' side siding at Bennett Yard (MP 389.3), where a spur heads south/'east' to the Starke Industrial Park, and BN (formerly Tower) (MP 392.0) at the west end of the yard, followed by dual road bridges overhead and a road bridge overhead.

There is a turn southwest, a through truss drawbridge across the Ashley River (MP 393.7), in the marshes, where full line speeds resume, Drayton Hall (MP 394.7), where single track starts, a bridge over a river, South Drayton Hall (MP 394.8), dual road bridges overhead, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at "Sanders Road", dual road bridges overhead, Johns Island (MP 398.7), where a former SAL line from Charleston trails in from the east and the main line turns west, a road bridge overhead, a through truss bridge over a river in the marshes, a dirt road on the west side, to house, Intermediate Signals and a detector at Rantowles (MP 400.2), a grade crossing, Bernshill (MP 403.5), where double track resumes and the passenger speed limit falls to 70 mph on the east track, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at North Ravenel, Ravenel (MP 406.7), where a branch once trailed in from the south, a road alongside to the west, and a grade crossing.

Single track starts again, and full line speeds resume, at South Ravenel (MP 408.0), a dirt road alongside to the west, Adams Run, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Jericho (MP 410.8), two grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at Adams Run Road, Intermediate Signals at Parkers Ferry, a grade crossing, a divided road alongside to the west beyond a line of trees, Pon Pon, MP 415.4, where double track resumes and the passenger speed limit falls to 70 mph on the east track, Edisto (MP 418.7), where single track starts again and full line speeds resume, a bridge over a river, a detector at MP 419.0, a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Jacksonboro, two dirt track grade crossings, a detector at MP 421.0, Intermediate Signals at Ashepoo River, a spur to the east, a bridge over the eponymous river, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Bennett's Point, a grade crossing, and a road bridge overhead.

Double track resumes and the passenger speed limit falls to 70 mph on the west track at North Green Pond (MP 428.0), past extra track on the west side, Intermediate Signals at Green Pond (MP 428.7), where a line from Walterboro once trailed in from the north, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, White Hall, South Green Pond (MP 432.0), where single track starts again and full line speeds resume, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, Salkahatchee (MP 440.0), where double track resumes and the passenger speed limit falls to 70 mph on the east track, detectors at MP 440.4, a bridge over a stream, a turn south-southwest, Intermediate Signals at River Run, MP 442.0, where the speed limits fall to 55/45 on the east track, a grade crossing, and MP 442.8, where a line to Augusta turns away to the northwest, extra track on the east side, and a grade crossing, to Yemassee (MP 443.0), where there is a passenger station (brick depot and platform to the west) and a grade crossing, and a line from Port Royal trails in from the south-southeast.
