Connellsville to Cumberland (Viaduct Junction)

At Connellsville (MP 269.7), where the speed limit is 55-45 to the south, a former PRR branch trails in from the northeast, there is a passenger station (a shelter on the east side, in 2007), a street alongside to the east, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, extra track on the east side at a gravel plant, a wooded hillside to the east, a footbridge overhead, and a former large yard on the west side of the line. At Greene Junction (MP 268.6), there are signals and crossovers, a siding on the west side of the line starts, and the line to Morgantown, WV, heads away to the southwest.

On the east/north bank of the Youghiogheny River in the Youghiogheny Gorge, with the former route of the Western Maryland on the other bank, the speed limit drops to 45-40 from MP 267.2 to 266.2, the line turns east past the signals at Casparis (MP 266.1), where the siding ends and the speed limit rises to 50-45, and then to 55-45 at MP 265.4, rocky walls to the east/north, Intermediate Signals at Bluestone, rocky walls to the north, then wooded hillside, Intermediate Signals at Indian Creek (MP 262.9), where a branch to Jones Mills once continued east (and the deck girder bridge for the former branch is still there), and a deck girder bridge over Indian Creek, and the main line turns south-southeast with speed limit 40-30, rocky walls on the east/north side again.

There is again a wooded hillside to the east, followed by rocky walls again, Intermediate Signals at MP 260, a bridge over drainage on a curve, a short extra track on the east side, MP 259.4, where the speed limit drops to 30 mph, Intermediate Signals at MP 259.1, where it returns to 40-30, Intermediate Signals at Stewartown (MP 258.8), still curving easterly, following the riverbank, with more rocky walls on the east side, MP 258.4, where the speed limit falls to 35-30, a turn southwest, Intermediate Signals at MP 257.4, where the speed limit falls to 30 mph as far as MP 256.5, where it returns to 40-30, southeast to Kauffman, south, southwest and then southeast, past MP 253.7, where the speed limit falls to 30 mph to MP 253.0, extra track on the east side, past a grade crossing at Wilderness Voyageurs, Ohio Pyle, detectors at MP 252.1, to the signals and crossovers at HK Tower (MP 251.8), where the speed limit is 45-40, falling to 40-35 at MP 251.5.

A long turn east leads to Intermediate Signals Bidwell (MP 248.3), where the speed limit is 45-40, rising to 55-40 at MP 247.8, and then falling again to 40-35 at Intermediate Signals at Marble Hill (MP 245.6), southeast past a grade crossing to the crossovers at Draketown (MP 244.3), and then south past a bridge over a side river, a bridge over a road, and a bridge over a stream, to Confluence, where the line turns away from the Youghiogheny River coming from the south and turns east to follow the Casselman River which is coming from the east.

At Low Grade Junction (MP 242.9), the line splits into two portions, a higher grade line (speed limit 40-35 to MP 241.4, then 50-40 to MP 239.6) heading due east past a grade crossing to Intermediate Signals at Ursina, with a valley below to the north, away from the river off to the south, and then south-southeast, with a road alongside to the  northeast that climbs away as the line passes through Brook Tunnel (speed limit 30 mph), while the Low Grade Line, with its own milepost sequence, continues south-southeast, along the north bank of the Casselman River, with speed limit 35-30, and turns east, still along the river bank, with speed limit 40-30, through a short tunnel (speed limit 30 mph), to Brook, with speed limit 35-30, where the lines come back together along the Casselman River, but do not connect, continuing east-northeast, with many curves and speed limit 40-30, to Shoo Fly (MP  237.0), where the lines connect and until 2012 reduced to single track (speed limit 35-30), with a bridge over a road and a rock wall on the north side for the passage through Shoo Fly Tunnel and Pinkerton Tunnel (both daylighted in 2012), turning north, formerly returning to double track (but continuously double-track from 2012) at Pinkerton (MP 235.3), with extra track on the north side, turning east-northeast again with speed limits 50-45 on track 1 and 45-40 followed by 50-45 on track 2, past a pond on the north side, away from the river, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, and Markleton (MP 233.9), with speed limits 45 mph on track 1 and 45-40 on track 2, a bridge over drainage and Intermediate Signals at Casselman.

The line turns north, past detectors at MP 231.4, a grade crossing, and a bridge over a stream, east, northeast past Intermediate Signals at Blade Runner, with extra track on the north side, and east again, with speed limit variously 55-45, and 45-40 on track 1 and 50-40, 55-40 and 45-40 on track 2, past a grade crossing in town, a bridge over a stream, crossovers and former location of the wye with the line north to Johnstown at Rockwood (MP 226.8), where the main line turns south-southeast, past  Intermediate Signals at MP 225.6, where speed limits rise to 50-45 and there is a rock wall on the east side back from the track, east past a stone quarry on the north side, Intermediate Signals at Atlantic (MP 223.1), where speeds drop to 40-35 and there is a pond on the north side, MP 221.8, where speed limits rise to 45-35, and MP 220.9, where they return to 40-35, curvily southeast past a road bridge overhead, crossovers at Garrett (MP 219.9), where the Berlin branch once trailed in from the northeast, a bridge over a side river, a road bridge overhead on the northeast side.

Speed limits are 35 mph from MP 219.2 to 217.7, and the line continues curvily south past a road (US 219) alongside to the east and crossovers (signal bridge) at Yoder, and a grade crossing and a co-located road bridge overhead, and under the former Western Maryland's steel trestle Salisbury Viaduct, southeast past a road alongside to the northeast, Intermediate Signals at Salisbury [Junction] (MP 216.3), where speed limits rise from 40-35 to 45-35 and the Salisbury Industrial track once departed on the south side, east past a road bridge overhead, detectors at MP 215.1, Meyersdale (MP 215.0), two grade crossings in town (the first one at an intersection), Intermediate Signals at Lake City (~MP 214) and a grade crossing, and curvily south-southeast, past MP 213.7, where speeds fall to 40-35, under the massive through truss bridge that once carried the WM over the line, with big windmills on the hillside nearby, MP 212.7, where speed limits rise rise to 45-35, a grade crossing, a road alongside to the east, the lines separate a little as they curve east, with a center track (a long crossover) appearing between them, and a recent (2000) road bridge overhead that replaced a previous spindly wooden road bridge, to the 2,258 ft. elevation "Summit of the Alleghanies" and crossovers at Sand Patch (MP 211.2), where there was once a tower on the south side of the line.

On the east side of Sand Patch summit, the line turns northeast, with a high rock wall on the north side, west of the tunnel, across from the former location of the tower, passing through the 4,475 ft. Sand Patch Tunnel with speed limit 45-30, past the turnback center siding and crossover at Manila (MP 209.5), where the speed limit drops to 45-30, and the east end of the turnback siding at Otters (MP 209.0), where it drops to 35-30, curves counter-clockwise and and descends through the clockwise horseshoe curve at Mance, with a dirt road grade crossing halfway around the curve, after which it turns east-southeast at an s-curve, past MP 206.9, where speeds rise to 40-35 and Intermediate Signals at NA (MP 205.6), where they rise to 50-35, past two dirt road grade crossings and a grade crossing, dropping into a narrow valley at Intermediate Signals at Philson (MP 202.2), past west-facing extra track on the north side, a bridge over a stream, and then that stream alongside to the north, and turning north, with speed limit 35 mph on the curve, to Intermediate Signals at Glencoe (MP 201.3), where speeds are 35-30.
