Gorham to Benton Junction

From the wye at Chap (MP 339.10, two-tenths of a mile south of Gorham on the east side of the St. Louis to Illmo line, the Chicago line heads  north-northwest, single track, CTC, 20 mph on the wye and maximum speed 60 mph thereafter, past the 5,772 ft. siding at Grimsby (MP 336.7 to MP 335.5, where there is a 40 mph speed restriction and an erstwhile Illinois Central line once crossed on the flat), a turn east, east-northeast past a detector at MP 331.3, east-southeast, just east of due north past a spur at Murphysboro (MP 328.8), east-northeast past the former location of a flat crossing with an erstwhile former Mobile & Ohio line and a former flat crossing with an erstwhile IC line at Harrison, just south of due east, northeast past a detector at MP 321.0, where the speed restriction has risen to 50 mph, just north of due east past De Soto, where a branch once headed north and there is a bridge over the IC main line to Carbondale.

The line turns northeast, just north of due east past a spur north to Burning Star Mine #5 at Burning Star (MP 317.5), where the restriction is back down to 40 mph, northeast within the 6,506 ft. siding at Bush (MP 316.1 to MP 314.6), where an erstwhile line to the coalfields once headed east-southeast, past Royalton Junction, where an erstwhile branch to Franklin Mine #7 once headed north, Weir, an erstwhile branch on the east side to Zeigler Mine #2, a detector at MP 308.4, where the full line speed prevails, Zeigler, a former flat crossing with an erstwhile IC/CB&Q line, a flat crossing with the former CB&Q southern Illinois line at Ziegler Junction (MP 306.1), an erstwhile branch on the north side to Old Ben Mine #14, an erstwhile wye for an erstwhile branch on the east side at Orient Junction, a turn just east of due north at Armstrong Crossing, the 10,727 ft. siding at Benton (MP 303.0 to MP 301.8, where there is a 55 mph speed restriction as the line turns east-northeast), a turn northeast, and then east to the junction with a former C&EI line (the UP Joppa Branch) from the south (i.e., on the east side), as the line turns just east of due north past a flat crossing with an Illinois Central line, at Benton Junction (MP 298.2), where there is a 30 mph speed restriction.
