Godfrey to Springfield

From the 13,420 ft. siding at Godfrey (MP 252.1), the single track, CTC, line turns northeast, with speed limit 79-60, past two grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, a spur at Brighton (MP 246.0), where there was once a flat crossing with a former CB&Q line, a grade crossing, a road adjacent to the east, two grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Miles, a grade crossing, a detector at MP 239.8, an 11,165 ft. siding at Shipman (MP 238.3), where the speed limit is briefly 60-40, with a bridge over a street in town, a grade crossing (Keating Street), Front Street alongside to the east, and grain silos to the west, all within the siding, and a grade crossing, east-northeast past Intermediate Signals at Plainview, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt road grade crossing, and a bridge over a stream, north-northeast past woods on both sides, Intermediate Signals at Macoupin, a dirt track grade crossing and a bridge over a road, and northeast again past the 17,490 ft. siding at Carlinville (MP 223.8), where there is a road alongside to the east, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals (in the siding), a passenger station (Amshack on the east side), a grade crossing, former extra track on the east side, two grade crossgins in town, a bridge over a road, a street alongside to the east, and a grade crossing with that street, all within the siding, the Illinois Terminal once crossed at grade, and there were once Alton branches heading east and west.

There are Intermediate Signals at Anderson, where a branch once headed east, two grade crossings, two dirt road grade crossings, a detector at MP 214.6, Nilwood (MP 214.5), where a former C&NW line bridges overhead (? there is a bridge abutment on the east side), three grade crossings, grain silos on the east side, two grade crossings, and more grain silos on the east side (all in Girard), the 9,625 ft. west side siding at Girard (MP 210.8), where the speed limit is 40 mph for the flat crossing with the BNSF's line to southern Illinois, which runs along the northwest side of the UP line for a mile or so north of the crossing, and the line turns north-northeast, past three grade crossings, grain silos on the east side (no longer rail-served), Virden (MP 207.0), where the speed limit is 79-60 again, two grade crossings, a dirt road grade crossing, a golf course on the east side, Intermediate Signals at MP 202.4, an adjacent grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing in Auburn, the 10,505 ft. west side siding at Auburn (MP 200.0), where a Chicago & Illinois Midland line once crossed at grade, with a signal bridge overhead, two dirt track grade crossings, and a dirt road grade crossing within the siding (which ends at CP X198, Auburn), a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, two grade crossings in Chatham, a spur at Chatham (MP 194.3), a bridge over a street (in town), a deck girder bridge over Lake Springfield, Intermediate Signals, a detector (box on the east side) at MP 191.1, Woodside, Junod, dual highway bridges overhead (I-72), a grade crossing, and the start of a short segment of 2MT, CTC at Hazel Dell (MP 189.5), where an NS/Gateway Western line trails in from the west, there is a signal bridge overhead, and there are actually three tracks.

Approaching Springfield, the speed limit falls to 60-40, a connector over to the IC line further east departs eastward at KC Junction (MP 187.8), where there was once an Alton branch trailing in from the east and one from the southwest, and the IT once crossed at grade, and the speed limit falls to 40 mph for Iles (MP 187.3), a wide road bridge overhead, a former flat crossing with the NS line from the southwest to the northeast of the SP track which is now where that NS line leaves to the northeast and the line drops to single track, CTC, again, past  three grade crossings, signals at MP 186.2, and two grade crossings. The line runs along a street through the center of town, with speed limit 25 mph, past five grade crossings, a short embankment, the state buildings comprising Illinois’ capital, on the west side of the line, a bridge over a street, a grade crossing, more street running, and three more grade crossings to the Springfield passenger station, with platform and brick depot on the east side of the line (Intermediate Signals at MP 185.1), where the speed limit is 15-10, just south of a former flat crossing with an erstwhile Big Four line.
