Sheffield to Birmingham

From the junction of the west leg of the wye (20 mph on the wye) to the NS Memphis District, at Norala (MP 3.7), and the junction of the east leg of the wye (20 mph on the wye) to that line at Wilson, adjacent to the Sheffield Yard, the two legs of the wye come together (15 mph on the switches) at Lee (MP 5.0), heading south, single track, Traffic Control (CTC), Automatic Block Signals, maximum speed 35 mph, past a 10-car east-facing spur at Colbert Industrial Park (MP 5.6), and Pruett, turning just east of due south, past a detector at MP 9.9, and then curvily just west of due south, past Spring Valley, a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 12.1 to MP 14.1, a 35 mph speed restriction in Littleville, from MP 13.5 to MP 15.1, the 8,149 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding) from Littleville (MP 14.2) to Hyde (MP 15.9), MP 16.3, where the maximum speed rises to 40 mph, Good Springs, MP 18.6, where the maximum speed drops to 35 mph again, a detector at "Russellville" (MP 19.7), a 35 mph speed restriction through Russellville, from MP 19.7 to MP 23.8, MP 20.4, where the maximum speed rises to 40 mph again, a 213-car dual-ended spur at Russellville (MP 21.0), an 8-car west-facing spur at Farmers Mutual Exchange (MP 23.1), a 12-car east-facing spur at Celotex (MP 23.2), a 12-car east-facing spur at Vulcan Materials (MP 23.7), a detector at MP 23.8, and a 31-car west-facing spur at Isbell (MP 24.8), where an erstwhile mine branch once trailed in from the west.

The line turns east-southeast at MP 25.2, where the maximum speed falls to 35 mph again, south-southwest, with a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 26.9 to MP 27.8, and curvily just east of due south, with a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 27.8 to MP 28.6, a 20 mph speed restriction on the curve from MP 28.6 to MP 28.7, and a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 28.7 to MP 29.4, an 82-car dual-ended spur at Spruce Pine (MP 30.1), a 12-car west-facing spur at Sand Pit (MP 31.0), a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 31.7 to MP 32.5, the 8,676 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding) from Franklin (MP 32.0) to Philco (MP 33.8), a 6-car west-facing spur at Johns Manville (MP 34.7), a turn curvily south, a 14-car west-facing spur at HMH Supply (MP 37.6), a detector at "Bear Creek" (MP 38.2), a 30 mph daytime speed restriction, through Bear Creek, from MP 38.8 to MP 39.5, and a 12-car dual-ended spur at Bear Creek (MP 39.3), turning curvily east-southeast, and then south, past a 6-car west-facing spur at Tico (MP 44.2), a 6-car west-facing spur at Bowen (MP 44.2), a 6-car west-facing spur at Fullco Lumber Co. (MP 44.2), a 25 mph speed restriction through Haleyville, from MP 44.8 to MP 46.1, and a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 45.7 to MP 45.9.

There is a junction with a soon to be abandoned Illinois Central line, coming from just north of due west, at Haleyville (MP 45.8), the 50-car dual-ended spur at MP 46.0, the 9-car east-facing spur at Frontier Homes (MP 47.1), and a detector at MP 47.9, a turn southeast and then curvily just west of due south, past the 8,493 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding) from Delmar (MP 48.7), where there is a 15-car spur, to Yankee (MP 50.5), and the 7-car west-facing spur at Tennessee River P&P (MP 50.7), very curvily southeast, past the 18-car dual-ended spur at Natural Bridge (MP 56.7), a detector at "Natural Bridge" (MP 57.3), a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 58.7 to MP 59.0, a 20 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 59.0 to MP 59.3, a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 59.3 to MP 59.4, the 8,604 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding), from Bankhead (MP 59.6) to Lynn (MP 61.5), where there is a 4-car spur, and the 8,168 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding), from Ash (MP 66.1) to Nauvoo (MP 67.9), where there is a 20-car dual-ended spur for Winston Mining Company (MP 66.6) and a 20-car west-facing spur for Tennessee River P&P (MP 66.8).

The line turns south within the siding, and then curvily southeast past a 20-car dual-ended spur at Prospect (MP 73.0), a 36-car dual-ended spur at Gateway Mall Coal Company (MP 76.0), an 8-car west-facing spur at Saragossa (MP 77.2), a detector at "Saragossa" (MP 77.5), and the 7,865 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding), from Burton (MP 78.7) to Gamble (MP 80.3), turning south-southeast past a 12-car east-facing spur at TMA (MP 83.6), Wiggins (MP 84.0), a 10-car west-facing spur at Brown Pipe Company (MP 84.1), a 10-car west-facing spur at Bishop Brothers Hauling (MP 84.1), a 14-car west-facing spur at Gold Kist (MP 84.6), a 20 mph speed restriction over the grade crossing at 20th Street, Jasper (MP 85.9), a 15 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 86.2 to MP 86.6, and the junction (northeast quadrant connector, MP 86.4) and  flat crossing with the former Frisco at Jasper (MP 86.5), where there is a 148-car spur and the line turns south, west, northwest, and south again, past a 60-car dual-ended spur at Cameron (MP 88.3), west-southwest, south-southwest, south-southeast, and south again, with a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 91.5 to MP 91.8, south-southeast with a 30 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 94.9 to MP 95.3, and east, with a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 95.3 to MP 95.6.

There is a junction with the line that once ran from Columbus, MS, coming from the west at Parrish (MP 95.6/839.4), where the maximum speed drops to 30 mph, there is a spur south to Segco, a 156-car spur (yard) at MP 838.6 and a 9,043 ft. siding (variously 30 mph, 10 mph, and 25 mph), east-northeast to Standard (MP 837.5), with a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 839.5 to MP 837.7, turning very curvily southeast past a detector at "Cordova" (MP 836.1), a 14-car east-facing spur at Cordova Brick (MP 834.4), a 97-car dual-ended spur at Cordova (MP 833.0), an east-facing lead at Barney (MP 829.9), and an 8-car west-facing spur at Doliska (MP 826.5), a turn just north of due east, with a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 824.3 to MP 811.8, past Burnwell and a bridge carrying the former Frisco/IC line overhead, a turn curvily southeast past the 8,037 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding) from Bryan (MP 822.6), where there is a 45-car spur, to Locust (MP 821.0), a 10-car west-facing spur at Sipsey River Lumber (MP 821.0), a bridge over a former L&N brnach to West Jefferson, and a 5-car west-facing spur at Littleton (MP 819.1), where a branch once continued south.

The line continues very curvily southeast, past a former flat crossing with the erstwhile Jefferson Warrior Railroad at Linn Crossing, Jefferson Tunnel, the 7,852 ft. siding (30 mph on the siding, except 20 mph from MP 813.9 to MP 813.7 and 10 mph from MP 812.8 to MP 812.2), from Blossburg (MP 813.9) to Brookside (MP 812.2), a 20 mph speed restriction in Brookside, from MP 812.5 to MP 812.1 as the line turns just east of due south, a detector at "Brookside" (MP 811.8), Biven, a turn south-southeast, a 14-car dual-ended spur at Republic (MP 809.3), a 25 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 807.8 to MP 806.7, as the line turns very curvily east, a 20 mph speed restriction on curves from MP 806.7 to MP 801.1, as it turns very curvily just east of due south, a former connector on the east side from an erstwhile L&N line, an 8-car west-facing spur at Alabama Gas (MP 803.2), a 5-car east-facing spur at North Alabama Brick (MP 802.3), a connector on the east side to a former L&N line, and the flat crossing with a former L&N line to Bessemer at Boyles (MP 801.1), followed immediately by a connector on the west side with the former Southern line to Bessemer, another connector from which trails in at Lehigh (MP 800.8), where the line expands to Triple Track, Remote Control, and there is a flat crossing with a line between Woodlawn and E. Thomas Yard, with connectors in the northeast and northwest quadrants (25 mph on all switches).

There is a flat crossing with the former Frisco line between Boyles Yard and E. Thomas Yard, with a connector in the southwest quadrant, at Block Two (MP 800.4), as the line continues south-southeast, past the flat crossing with the former Frisco and Illinois Central, with southwest quadrant connector permitting their access to the erstwhile Terminal Station, and flat crossing with the former Central of Georgia, with southeast quadrant connector, at Block One (MP 799.6), the former location of the erstwhile Terminal Station, and the north apex, at Second Avenue (MP 798.6) of a wye with the Southern Main Line, where the former Alabama Great Southern comes in from the west-southwest at 27th Street (MP 798.2/AGS 142.0), and the east leg of the wye leads, inter alia, to Norris Yard.
