Rivanna Junction to Newport News

At Rivanna Junction (MP 84.5), the Piedmont sub, trails in on the north side of the James River line (the Rivanna sub., west of here) to form the double track, CTC, Peninsula sub. line, with overall speed limit 79 mph for passenger trains and 50 mph for freights, heading southeast, in Yard Limits, with local speed restriction 15 mph at the junction, rising to 30 mph east of the junction, with Dock Street alongside to the north, turning south past two extra tacks to the west (south), a bridge over streets and track at ground level, the location where a previous routing of the line in from the north once joined, a bridge over an angled street, and a bridge over a stream, all on the viaduct, the end of the viaduct as the line reaches ground level, signals at R Cabin (MP 83.2), the west end of the ten track Fulton Yard (which lies between the Two Main Tracks), where current-of-traffic (Rule D-251) starts on the north track (Track 1) while the south track (Track 2) remains CTC, Yard Limits, MP 83.0, where the passenger speed restriction rises to 50 mph, a turn just south of due east, away from the river, through pine forests, Intermediate Signals at "Stock Street", MP 82.3, where the passenger speed restriction rises to 55 mph, Intermediate Signals at "Egypt", and MP 81.3, where the passenger speed restriction rises to 65 mph and freights rise to full line speeds.

The east end of the yard is at the signals at Darbytown (MP 81.0), and the line passes a west-facing spur on the south side, MP 80.5, where full line speeds prevail, detectors at MP 79.8, extra track to the north, a road bridge overhead (Laburnum Avenue), a road crossing at SR 636 (Miller Road, MP 79.0), extra track to the north, curving away, a bridge over a river, crossovers at Fort Lee (MP 78.3), where there is an AH Robins Co. facility on the south side,an angled grade crossing with Charles City Road, Portugee Road alongside to the north, MP 78.0, east end of Yard Limits, a grade crossing wtih Beulah Road, Beulah (MP 76.2), where the double track reduces to single track, CTC, the dual bridges of I-295 overhead, a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 74.8 and MP 74.4, swamp to the north, Intermediate Signals at Poplar Springs, swampy woods on both sides with many bridges over the swamp, and a turn east-northeast past Intermediate Signals at Elko and a gated dirt road grade crossing.

The line turns back just  south of due east, past Intermediate Signals at Turners Cut, two grade crossigns, a detector at MP 66.8, Roxbury, an angled grade crossing, Intermediate Signals with an east-facing spur on the south side at Nance, a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 65.9 and MP 65.5, more swampy forest, MP 65, a grade crossing, a bridge over the swamp, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Mountcastle, a road alongside to the north, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing with SR 618, a former detector at MP 63.0, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, an angled grade crossing, and the 12,370 ft. south side siding at Providence Forge (MP 61.2), with an east-facing spur on the south side, a grade crossing, an embankment, a dirt track grade crossing, a road alongside to the north, extra track on the south side, and a dirt road grade crossing within the siding.

There is a grade crossing, an embankment, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, three dirt road grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at Windsor Shades, a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 56.5 and MP 56.0, a turn southeast with a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 54.0 and MP 53.0, a grade crossing, the road alongside to the north turning away, more swamp, a grade crossing leading to a road alongside to the north, an embankment, the road turning away, two cuttings, a grade crossing, Walkers, an embankment, a pond to the north, a bridge over a road, a pond to the north, and a turn northeast with a passenger speed restriction of 55 mph between MP 53.0 and MP 52.6, to avoid a bend in the James River.

The line turns just south of due east again, past a detector at MP 51.8, a passenger speed restriction of 75 mph between MP 51.2 and MP 49.9, Intermediate Signals at Diascund, a grade crossing, an embankment in the swamp, a bridge over a side river, a passenger speed restriction of 60 mph between MP 49.9 and MP 49.2, a cutting, and embankment, signals for the start of double track at Diano (MP 49.2), where there is a speed restriction of 40 mph on the turnout to MP 49.1, embankment, cutting, a turn southeast, swamp again, dual road bridges overhead, a spur curving away north, a turn northeast with a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 48.2 and MP 46.3, southeast with a passenger speed restriction of 75 mph between MP 45.8 and MP 44.7, a cement plant to the south, Intermediate Signals at Toano, east, and south-southeast with a passenger speed restriction of 75 mph between MP 43.2 and MP 43.0.

There is a 7,518 ft. south side siding and signals at the end of double track at Norge (MP 42.9), where there is a speed restriction of 40 mph on the turnout from MP 43.0, a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 42.9 and MP 42.6, a grade crossing at Williamsburg Pottery, a grade crossing, dual road bridges overhead, housing to the north, Ewell, a road to the south, Intermediate Signals at Magruder, a grade crossing, a road to the north, a detector at MP 38.9, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals, and a passenger station (platform with umbrella shed and brick depot to the south) at Williamsburg (MP 37.3).

It then turns southeast past a grade crossing, a bridge over a road (Colonial Parkway), a wooden pedestrian bridge overhead (the path to Colonial Williamsburg, to the south, from its parking lot, to the north), a road bridge overhead, housing to the north, signals at the start of double track at Toppings (MP 35.3), a road alongside to the north, dual road bridges overhead, the Penniman Industrial Track on the north side, a passenger speed restriction of 70 mph between MP 33.1 and MP 31.9, a wide road bridge overhead, signals and  a crossover at Grove (MP 32.0), an east-facing spur on the north side into the Naval Weapons Station, the road still alongside to the north, a west-facing spur on the north side, a bridge over a side river, the 7,120 ft. north side siding at Lee Hall (MP 27.2), with a signal bridge over the west end and a signal bridge at the east end, and the Badische Industrial Track on the south side into Fort Eustis.

There are lakes to the north and south, a road bridge overhead, signals at Amoco, a grade crossing, extra track to the north,  a wye with the Amoco Industrial Lead to the USN Supply Center on the north side, a bridge over drainage, a road bridge voerhead, singals for the end of double track at Oriana (MP 22.6), a road alongside to the north, a road bridge overhead, two bridges over streams, a road bridge overhead, a west-facing spur to the north, MP 20.5, where the overall speed limit drops to 50 mph, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 19, a west-facing spur to the north, dual road bridges overhead, Oyster Point, Morrison, a signal at Newport News Holdout, a grade crossing, MP 14.4, where Yard Limits start, extra track to the south, with a wye on its south side, a bridge over a street, extra track to the north (the west end of Newport News Yard), becoming seevral tracks, a bridge over a street, the ten track yard to the north, the House Track to the south, the Newport News Amtrak station (platform, umbrella shed, and depot to the south, signals at Hampton Roads (MP 14.1), at the east end of the platform, and a road bridge overhead as the yard to the north splits into two fans of tracks.

Most of the railroad facilities of this area are along the continuing line to the east of the Amtrak station, including Old Point Junction (MP 10.0), where there is a wye on the north side with a line to Hampton, Old Point Comfort, and Fort Monroe, and interchange tracks for Newport News Drydock and Shipbuilding, Pier IX, Dominion Terminal, and the Newport News coal transshipment terminal, before the End of Track (MP 2.6).
