Jackson to Memphis via Yazoo City

There is a freight yard on the west side at North Jackson (MP 218.2), with a road bridge overhead, at the north end of which there is a wye (speed limit 30 mph) where the Grenada District heads north-northeast, while the Yazoo District turns northwest, with speed limit 10 mph. There is a locomotive depot in the vee of the junction, on the east side of the Yazoo City line. From Jackson, MS, to Memphis, TN, Amtrak trains used to use the Grenada subdivision, but now use the Yazoo subdivision further to the west, which starts out running through rolling hills, with the 10 mph ending at Stonewall Street (MP 217.6) in favor of the 79?-60 maximum speed on this district's single track, CTC, line, as the north leg of the wye trails in on the east side..

A 30 mph freight speed restriction begins at MP 217.2, rising to 40 mph at MP 215.9, past an angled road bridge overhead, an angled grade crossing, signals, a road alongside to the east, the 8,900 ft. west side siding at Halston (MP 214.5), to MP 212.2, a bridge over a road, and an angled grade crossing. There are dual road bridges overhead, a 9,330 ft. siding on the west side at Cynthia (MP 211.3), with a north-facing spur on the east side, two south-facing spurs on the east side, and a grade crossing, all within the siding, which ends at MP 209.2, after which the line passes a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, a detector at MP 209.15, a dirt track grade crossing in the woods, Intermediate Signals,  Green, Pocahontas, an embankment in the woods, a 9,816 ft. siding on the west side at Flora Siding (MP 205.0), where the line turns north, with a grade crossing in the siding, and Flora, where the siding ends.

The line continues past a dirt track grade crossing in the woods, a bridge over a culvert, a grade crossing, a street to the east that turns over a grade crossing, a bridge over a culvert, MP 201, a bridge over a culvert, a road alongside to the east, a south-facing spur to the east, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a 3,191 ft. siding on the west side at Ragin (MP 197.6), where the line turns north-northwest again, with a spur heading away east at the south end of the siding and extra track on the east side, within the siding, a through-girder bridge over a river at MP 195.8 (freight speed limit 35 mph), three bridges over streams, a dirt track grade crossing, and a 3,601 ft. siding on the west side at Bentonia (MP 193.5), a grade crossing, a road alongside to the east, and a dirt road grade crossing.

There is a detector at MP 192.7, a dirt road grade crossing, a 9,350 ft. siding on the west side at Anding (MP 189.7), where the line turns curvily northwest (freight speed limits 50, 40, and 50 on curves),  with a bridge over a culvert and extra track to the east near the north end,  a cutting, two bridges over streams, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, Tinsley, where it turns north with freight speed limit 40 mph, a bridge over a stream, an embankment in the woods, a grade crossing at Denbury, a wooded area, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a 12,085 ft. siding on the west side at Valley (MP 180.2), where a line from Vicksburg once trailed in from the west and the line turns north-northeast, with a dirt road grade crossing and an angled road bridge overhead within the siding, a bridge over a culvert, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a through-truss bridge over a river, a detector at MP 177.6, a grade crossing, woods to the east and fields to the west, a dirt road grade crossing, and Crupp, as the line enters the valley of the Yazoo River, where the countryside is the low-lying Mississippi Delta country, famed in the songs of the blues and country music singers.

The line passes a cutting, an embankment, a bridge over a road, a grade crossing, Yazoo City (MP 175.2), where the freight speed limit is 20 mph from MP 177 to MP 172, there is a small yard on the west side, a grade crossing, and a passenger station with platform and depot to the west, a box at MP 174.88, two closed dirt road grade crossings, two grade crossings, a grade crossing to an industry to the east, Mississippi Chemicals, an angled grade crossing, a grade crossing, a box at MP 173.85, a closed grade crossing, three grade crossings, and Yazoo Junction, where a former Yazoo & Mississippi Valley line once left this former Yazoo & Mississippi Valley main line, heading north-northwest while the main line continues north-northeast.

There are two grade crossings, a north-facing extra track to the east, two road bridges overhead, an angled road bridge overhead, a north-facing extra track on the east side, a road alongside to the east, a bridge over a stream, a through-girder bridge over a stream, a bridge over a stream, a dirt road grade crossing,  the 10,600 ft. siding on the east side at Delta (MP 169.2), with a dirt road grade crossing within the siding, a road alongside to the east, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a south-facing extra track on the east side, Eden (MP 163.7), where the line turns north, a dirt road grade crossing, a detector at MP 162.3, a bridge over three or four culverts, Bee Lake (freight speed limit 40 mph on the bridge at MP 160.1), a through-girder bridge over a stream, and a dirt road grade crossing.

The line turns northeast at the Intermediate Signals at Thornton, past a through-girder bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, Good Hope, where it turns east, Intermediate Signals, Mileston, where it turns north-northeast, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, Westfield, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, Shackleford, three dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, the 9,184 ft. siding on the west side at Gwyn (MP 148.3), where a branch once trailed in from the southeast and the line turns curvily north, with a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a culvert, and a road alongside to the east, within the siding, two grade crossings, an angled grade crossing, and a grade crossing.

There are fields on both sides, with trees along the line, a dirt road grade crossing, a bridge over a stream,  Tchula (MP 147.8, freight speed limit 20 mph), a bridge over a stream, Wyatt, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a detector at MP 142.3, Keim, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, the 11,250 ft. siding on the west side at Cruger (MP 137.8),, with a bridge over a culvert and a grade crossing within the siding, a dirt road grade crossing where the line turns north-northeast, a through-girder bridge over a stream, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, woods on both sides, the 4,900 ft. west side siding at Sidon (MP 131.0), a bridge over a stream, a dirt road grade crossing, where the line turns north, a closed grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals,  Rising Sun (MP 127.2), where the line turns northeast, a grade crossing, a bridge over a river, a detector at MP 126.4, a dirt track grade crossing, South Greenwood (MP 125.1, where CTC ends and ABS begins, an erstwhile spur that trailed in on the east side, a grade crossing, the 5,350 ft. siding on the east side at Greenwood (MP 122.7, freight speed limit 20 mph through the town), with a road bridge overhead, extra track to the east, and a bridge over a road, within the siding, a grade crossing, extra track to the east, and the Greenwood passenger station, with platform and brick depot to the west.

The Columbus & Greenville Railroad crosses the IC at a gated grade crossing at Yalobusha (MP 121.9), and the line passes two grade crossing, and signals at Hunter (MP 120.6), where CTC resumes, a short embankment, a grade crossing and a bridge over a culvert, and turns curvily north at Grenada Junction, whence a line once headed northeast to Grenada (there is a track still in place), past two dirt track grade crossings, a lake on the east side, a through-girder bridge over a river, woods on both sides, Intermediate Signals, Craigside, a bridge over a 'river', a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, Wakeland, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, fields to both sides, the 9,542 ft. siding on the east side at Money (MP 112.8), with two dirt road grade crossings within the siding, Ruby, a grade crossing, and a detector at MP 107.4.

There are fields on both sides, a siding on the east side at Phillip (MP 105.0), where a branch once trailed in from the east and left to the west, and the line turns west (freight speed limit 25 mph on the curve), with a dirt road grade crossing in the siding, a through girder bridge over a river, a turn northwest, a bridge over a stream, and then north past a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals,  Somerville, Black Bayou Junction, where a branch once trailed in from the southwest, a dirt track grade crossing, Midway, where the line turns northwest, Glendora, where the line turns northeast, Intermediate Signals, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, Intermediate Signals and Whitehead, where it turns north (freight speed limit 40 mph on the curve).

The line continues past a bridge over a stream, a dirt road alongside to the east, two grade crossings, a detector at MP 95.7, a dirt road grade crossing, a road alongside to the east, a grade crossing, the 10,475 ft. siding on the east side at Swan Lake (MP 93.7), where a line to Clarksdale heads northwest, with a dirt track grade crossing in the siding, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a river, Intermediate Signals at MP 90.1, open fields to the east, a grade crossing, two dirt road grade crossings in the woods, Intermediate Signals, Mikoma (MP 89.1), a dirt road grade crossing, two grade crossings, a bridge over a stream, a siding on the east side at Brazil (MP 83.3), a grade crossing, a detector at MP 78.6, a grade crossing,  Chancy, a bridge over a stream, a road alongside to the east, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, and two dirt track grade crossings.

There is a 9,600 ft. siding on the east side at Lambert (MP 71.2, freight speed limit 40 mph past the siding, and 20 mph in town), where a line once trailed in from the south-southwest, with a road alongside to the east, a dirt road grade crossing, formerly rail-served silos to the east, an old coaling tower over the siding, two extra tracks to the east, and a grade crossing in town, all within the siding, extra track to the east, a detector at MP 69.2, a dirt road grade crossing, two extra tracks on the east side for silos, a dirt road grade crossing, four extra tracks on the east side for silos, two grade crossings in town, and Marks (MP 66.4), a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a through-girder bridge over a river, Intermediate Signals,  and Hinchcliff.

The line continues north past a former grade crossing, a grade crossing, Essex, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt road to the east, a pond to the east, a grade crossing, and Darling, turning northeast past a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road alongside to the east, a road alongside to the east, a dirt track grade crossing, Falcon, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a dirt road alongside to the east, two grade crossings in Sledge (MP 54.3), a spur to industry to the east, using tank cars, heading away, a spur heading away to an industry to the east, and then trailing back in, and a detector at MP 52.5, and north past Intermediate Signals, a road alongside to the east, a grade crossing, extra track on the east side, a grade crossing, and the 9,860 ft. siding on the west side at Crenshaw (MP 48.8), with a grade crossing, a bridge over a culvert, a road alongside to the east, and a dirt road grade crossing, within the siding.

There is Askew, Buxton, the road still alongside to the east, Intermediate Signals at MP 44.3, Sarah (MP 44.1, freight speed 40 mph on curves), a through girder bridge over a river, a bridge over a stream, the 2,051 ft. siding on the west side at Savage (MP 39.4), a spindly road bridge overhead, a dirt road grade crossing, a through-girder bridge over a river, Dooley, a dirt track grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a dirt track grade crossing, a spur on the east side, Prichard (MP 34.6), a bridge over a culvert, a detector at MP 34.3, an embankment in the fields, a dirt track grade crossing, the 9,940 ft. siding on the east side at Rials (MP 30.2), with a bridge over a culvert in the siding, a bridge over a road, a dirt track grade crossing, a grade crossing, and Lost Lake.

The line continues past several silos to the east, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, Banks (MP 26.9), a dirt road to the east, a grade crossing, dual road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals, Marienette, dual road bridges overhead, a grade crossing, and the 9,553 ft. siding on the west side at Lake Cormorant (MP 20.5), with south-facing extra track on the east side and a bridge over a stream within the siding, where a branch trails in from the southwest and the line turns northeast (freight speed 25 mph on the curve), past a grade crossing in fields to the east, Glover, Intermediate Signals, a dirt track grade crossing, Walls (MP 15.2), where there is a detector and the line turns north, an angled grade crossing, open fields to the east, Lake View (MP 13.1), where Two Main Tracks start (freight speed 25 mph on the switch, and 30 mph thereafter), CTC ends and ABS starts, a grade crossing and a through-girder bridge over a stream, and the line enters Tennessee.

The line (track 2, bidirectionally signaled) turns north-northeast at a location where another line (track 1, signaled for southbound movement only) continues north, and track 2 passes Hulett (MP 7.1), while track 1 passes a wooded area to the east, Intermediate Signals at B-Hill, Intermediate Signals at Shelby, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over a stream, a wooded area to the east, and a golf course to the east, to West Junction (MP 5.4), where Track 1 trails in from the west to join Track 2, and both track pass a bridge over a stream/gulley to reach the Memphis yard, the eight-track Johnston Yard, at the south end of the freight bypass to the east, just east of West Junction. (The passenger route goes northeast through the center of town, along the Mississippi River, while the freight line goes around to the east.).

After passing a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a through-girder bridge over an inlet, a flood wall (with closeable gate over the line), a bridge over a culvert, and a road bridge overhead, a loop track on the east side just south of the junction, a bridge over a single line below, a grade crossing with an east-west street, a former spur trailing in from the east, a cutting, MP 3, a grade crossing, a grade crossing with a north-south road, a former spur trailing in on the east side, MP 2 in a wooded area to the east, and a road bridge overhead, the passenger line (speed limit 30 mph) rejoins the line from the Grenada District, trailing in from the south (on the east side), at Y&MV Junction (MP 0.0/394.3), where it turns north, with speed limit 20 mph.

There is a wooded area to the east, a road bridge overhead, south-facing signals, a wooded area to the east, yard tracks and spurs west to the MidSouth terminal and Presidents Island on the west side, a south-facing sign saying "CN Junction" (this is on the CN!), and a bridge over a wide street on an embankment, to Broadway (MP 392.5), where there is a southeast quadrant connector and  flat crossings and intersections with three separate tracks in a grouping to the south and one to the north, for the BNSF (former Frisco), NS and CSX lines to the east, and BNSF (former Frisco) and UP (former MP) lines crossing the river to the west, with a northeast quadrant connector and a bridge over a street..

Amtrak's Memphis Central Station MP 391.8) is just to the north, with a road ramp up from the street on the east side, parking lots on both sides, platforms to the east and between the two tracks, with the Amtrak facilities in part of the former headhouse, the rest of which is for lease, and double track and speed limit 10 mph from Broadway to MP 391.0,  after which the 30 mph single track line turns north-northeast where the erstwhile line from Union Station trailed in, runs briefly along the east bank of the Mississippi River and then the channel east of Mud Island, crosses an erstwhile L&N route, passes North Yard (MP 389.3), where a UP connector turns east, and turns northeast to the north end of the bypass (trailing in from the south) at Woodstock (MP 380.4).

For northbound Amtrak train 58, darkness falls in northern Mississippi, and dawn occurs in central Illinois.
