Syracuse to Chenango Falls

From the junction with Conrail's Chicago Line at the CR CP-293 (DL&W MP 274.1), the former Lackawanna Syracuse Branch heads east-southeast, past a spur to Sewage Treatment (MP 273.9), a spur to Roth Brothers Steel Company (MP 273.5), the Geddes Street Switch (MP 271.8), where it turns south-southeast, the passenger coach storage track (MP 271.2), the passenger station at Armory Square (MP 271.0), where the platform and depot are on the east side, one level up from the ground and there is an 825 ft. siding on the east side of the line, elevated trackage along Clinton Street, a 130 ft. long plate girder bridge over a street intersection as the line turns east, and then south, past the passenger station at Syracuse University (MP 269.9), and starts the 1.05% climb.

East Brighton Avenue bridges overhead, and the line turns east at Rock Cut, past CP 269 (MP 269.0)and a spur to Syracuse Supply Co.  (MP 267.8), and then south, past the dual I-481 bridges overhead, a spur on the west side to the Central New York Chapter, NRHS (MP 264.8), a spur on the east side to Benchmark Quarry (MP 264.8), Jamesville Yard (MP 264.7), a spur to Buttolph Lumber Company (MP 264.4), and the passenger station at Jamesville (MP 264.4). Line ownership changes from one Delaware Otsego subsidiary to another at the 3,200 ft. siding at Jamesville/"James" (MP 264.3), and the line continues south, with an overall speed limit of 30 mph for passenger trains and 25 mph for freights, past the road crossing at Seneca Street (MP 264.24), Jamesville Reservoir on the east side, the passenger station at Jamesville Beach (MP 262.7), and a road crossing (MP 262.7).

The line runs on a ledge up the hillside to the east of the wooded valley, curving south-southwest, past Onatavia (MP 256.8), where it turns south again, a bridge over US20, a road crossing at Apulia Road (MP 253.35), a road crossing at Dally Road (MP 252.12), a speed restriction of 10 mph between MP 252 and MP 248.7, a road crossing at SR 80 (MP 251.66), and the 1,400 ft. siding at Apulia (MP 251.6), crest of the hill, where there was once a wye for turning helpers, and the line turns southwest and then south again.

Reaching the top of the valley, the line then crosses into the Susquehanna River valley, with I-81 to the west, and drops down towards Binghamton, past a road crossing at Markham Hollow Road (MP 250.7), a road crossing at Babcock Road (MP 249.7) ,  the 1,000 ft. siding at Tully (MP 249.1), where it angles south-southwest, a road crossing at Grove Street (MP 249.1), a road crossing at SR11 (MP 248.2), a road crossing at Mary Belle Road (MP 247.65), a road crossing at Cummings Road (MP 247.35), a road crossing at Song Lake Road (MP 246.73), a road crossing at Currie Road (MP 245.46), a road crossing at Preble Road (MP 244.35), Preble (MP 244.3), a road crossing at Noonan Street (MP 243.4), and a road crossing at Little York (MP 241.6).

The line turns south, past a road crossing at Hooker Street (MP 238.2), and the 1,600 ft. siding at "Homer" (MP 238.0), and curves south-southwest, past a road crossing at Warren Street (MP 237.65), a road crossing at Clinton Street (MP 237.61), a road crossing at James Street (MP 237.31), Homer Station (MP 237.3), a road crossing at Cayuga Street (MP 237.14), a road crossing at Center Street (MP 236.95), and a road crossing at Copeland Street (MP 236.79), and then makes a sweeping but gradual curve around to just south of due east at Cortland, passing a road crossing at Grant Street (MP 235.05), a road crossing at Clinton Street (MP 234.87), a road crossing at Elm Street (MP 234.76), and the 475 ft. siding at Cortland (MP 234.7), where a Lehigh valley line once made a flat crossing and a Lackawanna branch to Cincinnatus once headed east.

There is a road crossing at East Court Street (MP 234.57), a road crossing at Port Watson Street (MP 234.45), a road crossing at Kellogg Road (MP 232.96), and a road crossing at Loope Road (MP 232.2), and the line turns curvily south-southeast, past a road crossing at Loope Road (MP 231.9), Blodgett Mills (MP 231.1), a road crossing at Main Street (MP 231.08), a road crossing at SR 392 (MP 224.8), Messengerville (MP 224.7), a road crossing at Mill Street (MP 221.16), the 600 ft. siding at Marathon (MP 220.9), a road crossing at Main Street (MP 220.86), a road crossing at South Street (MP 220.54), a road crossing at Main Street (MP 217.95), Killawog (MP 217.9), a road crossing at Hubbard Street (MP 214.35), a road crossing at Main Street (MP 214.31), Lisle (MP 214.3), a road crossing at High Street (MP 214.22), and a road crossing at River Street (MP 213.99).

The line turns southeast, past a road crossing at Main Street (MP 212.11), Whitney Point (MP 212.1), and a road crossing at Mill Street (MP 211.53), and then south-southeast again, past a road crossing at SR 11 (MP 210.88), a road crossing at Barker Hill Road (MP 208.18), a road crossing at SR 12 (MP 202.8), and "Forks" (MP 202.8), to Chenango Forks (MP 202.78), where the line trails into the north side of the Utica Main. The Susquehanna valley is surrounded by wooded hills that continue all the way to Scranton.
