Tilford Yard, opened by the L&N in 1957, has eight receiving tracks, 40 classification tracks (expanded from 24 at the yard's opening), and nine departure tracks. In 1998, the yard classified 1,300 cars per day, but many of the 100 trains per day passed through the terminal without terminating or originating.
The yard if five miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, just to the north of the NS Inman Yard.
