Missouri Valley to Marshalltown

From the wye junction between the former C&NW line coming east from Fremont and the former C&NW line north from Council Bluffs at Missouri Valley Junction (MP 329.6), the 2MT, CTC, Automatic Train Control line, speed limit 40 mph, passes the east leg of that wye at Missouri Valley, 9th Street (MP 329.2), MP 329.0, where the speed limit rises to 60 mph for intermodal trains and 50 mph for other freights (except 45 mph for unit coal trains) on Track 1 (and remains 40 mph on Track 2), a turn north-northeast, crossovers at East Missouri Valley (MP 326.2), where the speed limit rises to 70/60 (except 45 mph for unit coal trains), a 60/50 speed limit between MP 321.4 and MP 320.9, after which it returns to 70/60 (except 45 mph for unit coal trains), Logan (MP 321.2), a bridge carrying the Illinois Central line overhead, a turn north, with the IC line alongside to the west, a turn northeast, a crossover at West Woodbine (MP 316.3), start of a 13,000 ft. siding (30 mph on the turnouts), a turn north-northeast with the IC still alongside to the west, the end of the siding, and a crossover at East Woodbine (MP 313.7), and Woodbine (MP 313.1).

There are detectors at MP 312.4, a crossover and start of a 9,000 ft. siding (30 mph on the turnouts) at West Dunlap (MP 305.9), the end of the siding and a crossover at East Dunlap (MP 304.1), Dunlap (MP 303.3), a turn northeast, detectors at MP 297.4, Dow City, Arion (MP 293.1), where an erstwhile Milwaukee line once crossed, a crossover at West Denison (MP 291.1), the end of CTC and beginning of current-of-traffic, where there is a 40 mph speed restriction on the switch on Track 1 (westward), a turn east-northeast, away from the IC, where a line once continued north-northeast at Denison (MP 286.4), a turn northeast, detectors at MP 278.6, a crossover at Vail (MP 277.5), a turn east-southeast, a crossover at Westside (MP 271.5), a turn east-northeast and then east, Arcadia (MP 268.4), a turn east-northeast, a turn southeast, Maple River, where a line once trailed in from the north, a crossover at MP 260.1, where a line once trailed in from the west-southwest, Carroll (MP 258.4), where an erstwhile Chicago Great Western line once crossed, a 55 mph speed restriction between MP 258.4 and MP 257.6, and detectors at MP 257.6.

The line turns east past Glidden (MP 250.5), just south of due east past shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators at Ralston (MP 245.9), crossovers at Scranton (MP 241.0), and detectors at MP 240.9, just north of due east past Coon Siding, shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators and a crossover at Jefferson (MP 231.8), a former flat crossing with an erstwhile Milwaukee line, a crossover at MP 229.3, crossovers and the wye junction on the north side with the former Minneapolis & St. Louis, which used to continues south on a flat crossing, at Grand Junction (MP 225.1), a 60/50 speed limit on Track 1 between MP 221.1 and MP 203.7, Beaver (MP 219.9), detectors at MP 219.7, and Ogden (MP 214.5), where there was once a flat crossing with an erstwhile Minneapolis & St. Louis line, turning northeast where an earlier line once continued ahead, and then just north of due east, with a 70 mph speed limit on the new (August 20, 2009) Boone High Bridge, replacing the 45/35 speed restriction on both tracks between MP 207.9 and MP 207.4 over the old Kate Shelley Bridge, over the Des Moines River at MP 207.6 and past High Bridge, and east at Coal Road where a spur from Coal Banks once trailed in on the north side, past a 45 mph speed restriction on Track 1 between MP 203.7 and MP 202.4, the start of Yard Limits at MP 203.5, the location where the earlier line trailed in on the south side, a crossover at MP 202.4, a 1.5 mile spur on the north side at Boone (MP 202.2), and a 60/50 speed limit on Track 1 between MP 202.2 and MP 200.3, past Hard Road and a former flat crossing with an erstwhile Milwaukee Road line at East Boone, after which it rises to 70/60 (except 45 mph for unit coal trains), as the line turns just south of due east.

Yard Limits end at MP 198.0, and the line passes West Central Coop, shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators at Jordan, Ontario (MP 192.4) and detectors at MP 192.3, turning east-southeast past the start of Yard Limits at MP 190.0, the wye junction (10 mph on the turnout) on the north side with the line south from Eagle Grove at West Ames (MP 189.3), start of CTC on Track 2, just north of due east past a 40 mph speed restriction between MP 189.3 and MP 188.3, crossovers (30 mph) at East Ames (MP 186.9), start of CTC on Track 1, where a line from Des Monies once trailed in from the south, and the yard at Ames Yard (MP 185.0), east past crossovers and wye junction (30 mph on the turnouts) with a connector to the former Rock Island 'Spine Line' on the south side from West Kansas City Junction (MP 182.0) to East Kansas City Junction (MP 181.5), where CTC ends and current-of-traffic starts, the end of Yard Limits at MP 181.0, and shuttle-enabled rail-served grain elevators at Nevada (MP 180.6).

There is a bridge over the former Rock Island "Spine Line", Colo (MP 173.5), detectors at MP 173.3, crossovers at MP 165.9, State Center (MP 165.4), where an erstwhile Minneapolis & St. Louis line once headed south-southeast, as the line begins to curve back and forth, Lamoille (MP 158.7), detectors at MP 158.6, a sharp turn north where an erstwhile Chicago Great Western line came alongside from the south, and then a gradual curve back to just north of due east, crossovers (30 mph on the crossovers) and a 10,000 ft. westward siding at West Marshalltown (MP 155.3), where CTC starts, a 50 mph speed restriction between MP 154.8 and MP 153.7, the start of Yard Limits at MP 153.9, the junction with the former Minneapolis & St. Louis trailing in on the north side at Marshalltown (MP 151.3), where there is a 3.2 mile spur to the Alliant Energy Sutherland Station on the north side, a turn southeast, the end of Yard Limits at MP 148.5, and the crossovers and junction (30 mph on the turnouts) with the former Minneapolis & St. Louis line south to Albia at East Marshalltown (MP 148.2).
