Ogden to Granger

From Cecil Junction (MP 993.6), legal meeting place of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific, where the speed limit is 55 mph and the OSL trails in from the north, there are crossovers onto Two Main Tracks, CTC, with speed limit 30 mph, a bridge across the Ogden River, an erstwhile wye on the west side, an erstwhile flat crossing to the D&RGW terminal station, and the still-extant south leg of the wye where the rump of the former D&RGW trails in, to Ogden (MP 993.0), where the freight yards are on the west side of the line, and the former Ogden Union Depot, now a museum, is on the east side of the residual passenger platforms with their umbrella sheds.

The line continues south, past the wye on the west side with the former OSL line south to Salt Lake City and then the loop line off on that side that curves around to join that line, as the eastward main line, still heading south, two Main Tracks, CTC, speed limit 40 mph, passes shuttle-enabled destination grain elevators, 31st Street (MP 991.5), where the former Bamberger Railroad once crossed at grade, comes alongside the east bank of the Weber River, and passes crossovers at Riverdale (MP 989.7), north end of Riverdale Yard on the west side of the line, and turns east-southeast to the south end of the yard at the crossovers at East Riverdale (MP 988.6), where the speed limit is 60 mph, along the (now) north bank of the Weber River.

The tracks separate, heading generally, but curvily, east at different levels up the narrowing Weber Canyon, speed limit 55 mph, past detectors at MP 986.2, a spur at Uintah (MP 984.7), and 250 ft. Sheephead Tunnel (MP 982.0, Track 1 only), turning curvily southeast and coming back together again at crossovers at Strawberry (MP 977.7), where control passes to Double Track, ABS, past a westward hold signal at MP 975.5, a spur at Peterson (MP 975.4), with a highway to the north and 9,752 ft. Mt. Ogden to the west, Stoddard, a detector at MP 968.8 on track 1, and the 6,751 ft. siding at Morgan (MP 968.0), where the speed limit is 75 mph and the line turns curvily east past 311 ft. The tracks separate and run at different levels again, on the north side of the canyon, past detectors at MP 936.9, a spur at Castlerock (MP 936.2), where the speed limit is 50 mph, 201 ft. Tunnel 7 (MP 935.5) on the south track, a turn north and then curvily northeast again, 1,223 ft. Tunnel 6 (MP 931.3) on track 1, 1,223 ft. Tunnel 5 (MP 931.1) on track 2, a spur at Curvo (MP 930.5), where the speed limit is 55 mph, and 1,107 ft. Tunnel 4 (MP 930.1) on track 2.

The tracks come back together again, with a road grade crossing, at the 4,662 ft. center siding at Wahsatch (MP 927.1), passing detectors at MP 925.6, and turning east into Wyoming, where the landscape opens out somewhat, past an eastward hold signal at MP 919.2, where the speed limit is 45 mph, and crossovers and a 9,064 ft. siding on the north side at Evanston (MP 917.2), where the roundhouse and shop complex are now owned by the city, before turning south-southeast, past a westward hold signal at MP 915.8, and then east-southeast at the 1,501 ft. center siding at Millis (MP 912.5), where an earlier version of the line (1868-1901) continued south-southeast and the speed limit on today's line is 60 mph, on a ledge on the northern hillside, past a detector on track 2 at MP 910.6, south past a detector on track 1 at MP 909.1, east, with a mountain to the west and a road on the hillside to the north, and then northeast to crossovers at the summit at Altamont (MP 904.8), in a broad valley with bluffs on either side, where the speed limit is 45 mph and Two Main Tracks, CTC, begin, with the tracks separating and at different levels past 6,706 ft.
