Montgomery to Parkwood (Birmingham)

From M&M Junction, where a former Western Railway of Alabama line trails in from the southwest, a 25 mph speed restriction, from MP 488.1 to MP 487.8, the junction at Bell Street, where a former Mobile & Ohio line trails in from the north side and the former ACL joins from the south side, the Amtrak stop at Union Station, with its overall roof and depot to the southeast, off the main line to the southeast, a 40/30 mph speed restriction, from MP 487.8 to MP 485.0, and the junction at Montgomery, where a former Seaboard Airline line heads northeast, the former Western of Alabama heads north, the former L&N turns just west of due north, and a turn north-northwest, where a connector from those other two lines trails in from the east, to S&N Yard (MP 485.0), the former L&N continues north-northwest, single track, CTC, maximum speed 79 mph for passenger trains, 60 mph for intermodal trains, and 50 mph for other trains, with local speed restriction 45/35 mph to MP 483.6, past Vera, turning northeast across a signaled drawbridge over the Alabama River (MP 484.0), , and then just west of due north, after which full line speeds prevail.

There is a turn just east of due north, with a 55/50 mph speed restriction from MP 482.0 to MP 481.7, at Prattville Junction, where an erstwhile branch to Prattvile once headed west, a 32-car north-facing spur at Coosada (MP 480.0), a detector at MP 479.7, a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 476.3 to MP 475.9 as the line turns just west of due north at the 5,400 ft. east side siding at Elmore (MP 475.7), where an erstwhile branch to Wetumoka once headed east, Speigner, a 65/50 mph speed restriction from MP 472.3 to MP 471.8 as the line turns west-northwest, a detector at MP 472.2, the 18-car north-facing spur at MP 470.0, a 55/50 mph speed restriction from MP 468.9 to MP 468.7, a 60/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 468.7 to MP 467.1, the 10,560 ft. west side siding at Deatsville (MP 468.6) a gradual curve to just west of due north, with a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 467.1 to MP 464.3, Rollins, and a 60/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 464.3 to MP 463.1.

The line turns curvily north-northwest, with a 40/30 mph speed restriction from MP 463.1 to MP 460.3, past Marbury, a 45/30 mph speed restriction, from MP 460.3 to MP 459.4, the 5,335 ft. east side siding at Mountain Creek (MP 459.7), a 50/45 mph speed restriction from MP 459.4 to MP 457.1, a 45 mph speed restriction, from MP 457.1 to MP 455.8, Verbena, northwest, with a 65/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 455.8 to MP 453.95, and a 60/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 453.95 to MP 453.9, after which full line speeds prevail, past the 7,865 ft. east side siding at Coopers (MP 453.2), a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 452.2 to MP 451.3, a 45 mph speed restriction, from MP 451.3 to MP 451.1, a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 451.1 to MP 447.0, Falakto, a detector at MP 450.0, and north-northwest past the 7,260 ft. east side siding at Clanton (MP 447.1), where there is a spur on the east side.

There is a 40/35 mph speed restriction, from MP 447.0 to MP446.4, after which full line speeds prevail, Lomax, a turn northwest and then north-northwest again, with a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 443.3 to MP 443.1, a 50/45 mph speed restriction, from MP 440.4 to MP 439.6, a 45 mph speed restriction, through Thorsby, from MP 439.6 to MP 439.0, a 60/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 439.0 to MP 430.0, an 8-car south-facing spur at Thorsby (MP 438.0), the 11,330 ft. west side siding at Jamison (MP 436.6), a spur at Superior Products, Kalona (MP 434.0), a turn just east of due north, Wessington, a detector at MP 431.9, Ocampo, a 45 mph speed restriction, from MP 430.0 to MP 429.0, a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 429.0 to MP 425.0 as the line turns north, past Minooka, South Calera, a location where an erstwhile L&N line once trailed a 35 mph speed restriction, from MP 425.0 to MP 424.9 over a flat crossing with the former Southern, a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 424.9 to MP 422.4, and a yard on both sides at Calera (MP 423.8).

A 112-car dual-ended spur for Vulcan Materials trails in from the west-southwest at  MP 423.0, and the line turns just west of due north, with a 50 mph speed restriction, from MP 422.4 to MP 421.3, past Dargin, Varnons, a 60/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 421.3 to MP 418.7, a 55/50 mph speed restriction (on Track 1 from MP 417.5), from MP 418.7 to MP 414.4, spurs on both sides, one with 28-car dual-ended capacity, at Longview (MP 418.1), a split into two tracks, on separate routings (both turning west-northwest and then just east of due north), at MP 417.5, a 40 mph speed restriction on Track 2 from MP 417.5 to MP 412.5, a grade crossing on Track 2 at SR 26 (MP 416.2), a tunnel on Track 2, a 40 mph speed restriction through Siluria on Track 1, from MP 414.4 to MP 413.1, as the tracks reduce to one at Scotrock, a 60/50 mph speed restriction from MP 413.1 to MP 411.3, past Hardy (MP 412.6), a 50/45 mph speed restriction, from MP 411.3 to MP 406.3, and a detector at MP 411.0.

The line turns west-northwest, with a 40 mph speed restriction, from MP 406.3 to MP 404.4, northwest, with a 55/50 mph speed restriction, from MP 404.4 to MP 400.7, passing beneath a bridge carrying the Lineville subdivision overhead (from the east), Tacoa, where an erstwhile branch once trailed in from the southwest, just west of due north past Elvira, the Lineville subdivision trailing in on the west side at the 12,265 ft, siding at Parkwood (MP 403.3), where an erstwhile line to Bessemer once left to the north and the main line turns north-northeast.
