Norris Yard was built by the Southern Railway in 1952, and has 12 reception tracks and 56 classification tracks, with a throughput of 1600 cars per day in 1998.
The yard is on the north side of the former Southern main line, and on the southeast side of the former Alabama Great Southern, east of Birmingham, AL.
