Greensboro to Lynchburg

At the passenger station at Greensboro (MP 283.9), the line to Raleigh and Durham, used by the Carolinian, leaves to the east and the main line turns north, with speed limit 20 mph to MP 283.3 and 55-50 thereafter, passing an industrial spur on the east side of the line (where the speed limit is 50 mph before rising to 65-50), north-northeast past Busick (MP 277.6), where the speed limit rises to 70-50 and the line reduces to single track (with speed limit 50-45 through this and all other such turnouts), a detector at MP 276.5, and Rudd, north, northeast past Browns Summit, north, northeast past Benaja, north past a detector at MP 266.0, where the speed limit is briefly 65-50, Priddy (MP 265.6), where double track resumes, Edna (MP 260.4), where the speed limit falls to 60-50, and Reidsville (MP 259.9), where the speed limit is 45 mph and there is extra track, north-northeast past Pennrington, where the speed limit is 60-50 and then 65-50, northeast past Sadler (MP 256.0), where the track singles again and the speed limit rises to 70-50 following the turnout, Stacey, Ruffin, and a detector at MP 251.5, where the speed limit falls to 60-50, east with speed limit 50-45, and north-northeast with speed limit 55-50, 45 mph, and then 60-50, past Swann (MP 245.3), where double track resumes, with speed limit 55-50 and then 65-50, Pelham and Shelton, and across into Virginia.

A branch from Leaksville trails in from the west at Stokesland (MP 241.1), where the speed limit is 50 mph  as the line turns east-northeast, past detectors at MP 240.0 and Bentley (MP 239.8), before rising to 79-60-50, and reaches Danville (MP 235.8), where the speed limit is 40-35, a branch to Blanche turns south, and Dundee (MP 235.0), where the speed limit rises to 55-50 and then 70-50 a branch to Ringgold heads east and the main line turns north, past Fall (MP 232.5), where it reduces to single track again, Blairs, where the speed limit falls to 65-50, Dry Fork, where it falls to 60-50 and then rises to 70-50 again, White (MP 222.0), where double track resumes and the speed limit falls to 60-50, Chatham, where the speed limit falls to 55-50 and then 45 mph, and Day (MP 216.7), where the speed limit is 60-50, edges just east of due north past Whittle, where the speed limit rises to 70-50, Smothers (MP 212.0), where single track starts again, Gretna, where the speed limit is 50 mph before rising again and a line to Rocky Mount once headed west, Sycamore, where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph, and Green (MP 202.2), where double track resumes, turning northeast (50 mph on the curve) past Motley and Hurt (MP 197.8), where the speed limit is 55-50 there is extra track and a connector heads north to the former Virginian, a bridge over the Roanoke River at Altavista, where the line also bridges over the former Virginian, and turns north past Lane (MP 195.2), Yeatts, where the speed limit rises to 70-50, Clarion, Otter River, Deal (MP 190.0), where the line singles, Elvington, where it turns north-northeast (55-50 on the curve), Lawyers, Walke (MP 180.1), where double track resumes, MP 178.5 to 178.0, where the speed limit is 60-50 before rising to 79-60-50, and MP 175.0, where it drops to 50 mph, Montview (MP 174.6), where there is a yard, MP 173.8, where the speed limit drops to 40 mph, a wye on the east side with a track connecting to the former Norfolk & Western a half mile further west, Durmid (MP 173.5), where a former N&W line passes underneath and the line then passes under the ex-N&W at Cotton Mill Trestle, a connector to the former C&O James River line and facilities on the south bank of the river turns away east, the main line passes over the Campbell Trestle over and industrial spur, and enters the Kemper Street station at Lynchburg (MP 172.5).
