Lynchburg to Orange

The speed limit drops to 40 mph at MP 173.8, there is a wye on the east side with a track connecting to the former Norfolk & Western a half mile further west, Durmid (MP 173.5), where a former N&W line passes underneath and the line then passes under the ex-N&W at Cotton Mill Trestle, a connector to the former C&O James River line and facilities on the south bank of the river turns away east, the main line passes over the Campbell Trestle over an industrial spur, and enters the Kemper Street station (depot to the east) at Lynchburg (MP 172.5), where there is a road bridge overhead just north of the station. The line passes over the Buckwater Trestle, where N&W lines once passed below, past Rivermont (MP 170.9), where the line singles, and a detector at MP 170.8, passes through Rivermont Tunnel, and turns north-northeast on the James River trestle over the CSX (ex-C&O) James River line from Richmond to Clifton Forge, and then the James River (in two segments, with an island in the middle).

A Southern line once trailed in from the southeast, along the river bank, and the line passes a grade crossing, Harris (MP 169.1), where double track resumes, through the woods, and the speed limit rises to 55-50, a road bridge overhead, Montrose, where the speed limit rises to 65-50, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at Winesap, where the line turns northeast and the speed limit falls to 55-50, a road bridge overhead and a dirt road grade crossing, to Monroe (MP 165.1), and continues northeast along the foothills (“piedmont”), past Intermediate Signals (a signal bridge) at McIvor (MP 164.1), where the speed limit is 60-50, Intermediate Signals at Coolwell (MP 162.4), where it is 55-50, a road bridge overhead, a spur on the west side, a road bridge overhead, signals at Angelo (MP 160.8), where the speed limit is 60-50 and single track begins (speed limit 50-45 over this and all other such turnouts), a detector at MP 160.6, a bridge over a road below, a bridge over an Interstate highway, and Intermediate Signals at Sweet Briar (MP 158.4), where the speed limit is 65-50.

There are Intermediate Signals at Amherst (MP 155.6), where there is an old depot to the west and a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, a slide fence to the west side in the woods, a bridge over the Tye River, a bridge over a road, Intermediate Signals at New Glasgow (MP 153.4), Intermediate Signals at Tye River (MP 150.1), where there is a detector (MP 150.2), the speed limit is 55-50, there is extra track and a short line once headed northwest and double track resumes, a dirt road grade crossing, crossovers at Kingswood (MP 148.0), where the speed limit rises to 79-60-50, Intermediate Signals (signal bridge) at Arrington, a spur on the west side, a road bridge overhead, fields beyond the lineside trees, a signal bridge at Oak Ridge (MP 143.4), where single track begins again with a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, a dirt road grade crossing, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at  Shipman (MP 141.4), a dirt track grade crossing, two grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, a detector at MP 140.3,and Intermediate Signals at Elmo (MP 138.8).

An embankment in the woods, and then a cutting, precedes Intermediate Signals at Rockfish (MP 136.4), where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph and a line once headed east, followed by a rocky cutting, a bridge over a river below, extra track to the east, a rocky cutting, Intermediate Signals at  Faber (MP 133.8), where the speed limit is 50-45 with stretches of 50 mph on either side, a bridge over a stream on embankment, a dirt track grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, signals at Hamner (MP 132.0), where double track resumes (signal bridge over the double track) and the speed limit becomes 60-50, a dirt road grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, a road alongside to the east that turns across a grade crossing, wooded hills, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge at  Covesville (MP 129.2), where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph, three dirt track grade crossings with houses scattered alongside, a grade crossing, wooded hills, a dirt track grade crossing and the signals (signal bridge over double track) at Applegate (MP 126.6), where the speed limit is 65-50 and the line singles again.

There is a detector at MP 126.5, two dirt road grade crossings, Intermediate Signals at MP 124.4, three dirt track grade crossings, a bridge over a road, Intermediate Signals at North Garden, two dirt track grade crossings, a grade crossing just west of Red Hill (MP 120.4), where there is extra track curving away to the east and double track resumes, Intermediate Signals at Arrowhead, wooded hills, a dirt road grade crossing, Emerson, where the line turns east-northeast (55-50 on the curve), a dirt track grade crossing, detectors at MP 115.8, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at Teel, a road bridge overhead, a slide fence to the east, a bridge over a dirt road, a slide fence to the east, a road bridge overhead, an embankment, a grade crossing, extra track to the east, signals for the flat crossing, a second extra track to the east, a bridge over a road, and Charlottesville (MP 112.2), where the University of Virginia is on the west side, approaching the crossing, the CSX line used by the Cardinal crosses east-west at grade with a southeast quadrant connector, and the Amtrak station (brick depot) is in the northeast quadrant, with speed limit 20 mph on the platform track and 25 mph on the further track, and a road bridge overhead just north of the depot.

North of the station, there is a bridge over a road, the extra track to the east curves away, there are Intermediate Signals at Preston Avenue, an embankment, a bridge over a divided street, a bridge over a road, and a road bridge overhead, and the line turns north-northeast, with speed limit 65-50, past signals at Rio (MP 109.9), where the double track reduces to single and the line turns northeast with speed limit 60-50, a road bridge overhead, a dirt track grade crossing, Intermediate Signals, a road bridge overhead, a detector at MP 105.5, Intermediate Signals at Watts, a dirt track grade crossing in the woods, Proffit, where the speed limit is briefly 45 mph, a bridge over a river/stream, Intermediate Signals at Gilbert (MP 102.0), where there is extra track, Intermediate Signals at Burnley, where the line turns east, Harlow (MP 97.0), extra track on the west side, a grade crossing, two grade crossings in the woods, Intermediate Signals at Barboursville, where the line turns east-northeast (55-50 on the curve), two grade crossings in the woods, Somerset, Weyburn (MP 92.1), where the speed limit is 65-50, there is extra track on the north side, a signal bridge on the double track, a grade crossing, and the line singles again, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals at MP 89.x, a road bridge overhead, an old depot on the west side at Montpellier, a road bridge overhead, May (MP 87.1), where double track resumes, two dirt road grade crossings, a spur on the north side, a grade crossing, and Orange (MP 84.7), where the approach speed is 40 mph, there is extra track, a bridge over a road below just west of the junction, and that same CSX line trails in from the south (30 mph on the junction), as the line turns north.
