The major Toledo area yard is on the north side of the line at Airline Junction (MP 290.8), with three and then four yard tracks to the north, where the speed limit drops to 60-50 and a cantilever signal bridge where the west side of a large wye heads north to join the line to Detroit. The east end of the yard is at Z Tower, where there is a grade crossing and the line turns east with Detroit Yard on its north side, with the east leg of the large wye running down the center of the yard. A Michigan Central line once bridged over this complex from north to south, and there is an intermodal yard with three yard tracks, and then six yard tracks between the wye and the main. The east leg of the large wye trails in at the crossovers at CP 289 (MP 289.6), where the speed limit drops to 30 mph and a spur heads away north.
The former Clover Leaf once bridged overhead on the way to its Toledo station, there is a bridge over a stream, a road bridge overhead, a wide road bridge overhead, a through-truss road bridge overhead, crossovers at CP 288 (MP 288.7), where a 15,312 ft. siding starts, and the freight line turns southeast while the passenger line continues east, past an angled road bridge overhead and a road bridge overhead, into the Toledo Union Passenger Station (MP 288.3), which has a former west-end bay platform, a concrete depot on the north side of the line, an island and a north platform with art deco umbrella sheds over them, serving three through tracks with once two (and only one, in November 2006) east end bays on the north side. The passenger line turns south-southeast, with four extra tracks on the northeast side, past a grade crossing, to rejoin the main line at the crossovers at CP 287 (MP 287.9), where the former Wabash line crosses at grade, with a connector from Union Station in the west quadrant, and the main line turns east.
The line immediately crosses the Maumee River on the multi-span through truss movable bridge, with a road bridge overhead at the east end of the bridge, to CP Maumee (MP 287.6), where a connector diverges to the south onto a former PRR line that once bridged overhead at this point , and the line turns southeast past Fassett (MP 287.1), where the former B&O (Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton) line turns away to the southwest, past a location where a connector northeast from that line once passed beneath the ex-NYC line, and a road bridge overhead, to the crossovers at CP 286 (MP 286.9), where the speed limit rises to 60-30 and an east leg of a wye from that line trails in and the East Toledo Yard begins on the south side of the line, past a road bridge overhead, a box labeled "CP 286" on the north side, a bridge over a road, and an angled grade crossing, to Rockwell Junction, where the yard ends, a spur from a factory to the north trails in, and the former Hocking Valley (later C&O) line departs on the south side.
Between Toledo and Buffalo, the line runs along the south edge of Lake Erie, with a major lake port at Toledo, which is located north of the ex-NYC main line and is served mainly by the CSX (former Toledo Terminal) and NS (former Wheeling & Lake Erie), with little ex-NYC participation.
