Ashtabula to Carroll Street (Buffalo)

From CP 128 (MP 128.2), where the Youngstown Line trails in from the south and then heads to Ashtabula Harbor on the lake shore to the north and the speed limit is 50-40 across the intersections (connectors in the northwest and southwest quadrants) and flat crossing, extra track on the north side, a bridge over a street, a bridge over a river, and the "passenger station" (no Amtrak service) at Ashtabula (MP 127.7), with speed limit 15 mph on the station track, the speed limit on the double track line reverts to 79-70-60-50, past two grade crossings, detectors at "Ashtabula" (MP 126.4), where a line heads for the lake shore less than two miles away, a signal bridge, crossovers at CP 124 (MP 124.6), two grade crossings, Intermediate Signals (MP 122.x), Kingsville, Intermediate Signals (MP 121.x), two grade crossings, Intermediate Signals (MP 119.x), a grade crossing, crossovers at CP 117 (MP 117.0), where a 19,450 ft. siding on the north side once started, a road bridge overhead, four grade crossings in town, a bridge over a street, a bridge over a river, Conneaut (MP 114.5), where the line bridges over the Bessemer & Lake Erie line down to Conneaut Harbor and the speed limit is briefly 60-50 before resuming top speeds, a three or four track yard (B&LE?) on the north side of the line, crossovers at  CP 113 (MP 113.1), where the erstwhile siding ended, a dirt track grade crossing, and PA-OH State Line (MP 112.4), where the line enters Pennsylvania.

The line continues east-northeast following the lake shore (here, less than a mile away) past three grade crossings in the woods, signals at CP 110 (MP 111.0), detectors at "Springfield" (MP 108.6), Intermediate Signals at MP 107.1, two grade crossings, a dirt track grade crossing, a turn south of due east past a road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals (MP 103.x), a bridge over a road, a bridge over a river, a grade crossing, extra track on the north side, trailing in, Lake City (MP 101.2), a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals a grade crossing, a bridge over drainage, a turn east-northeast again, with the ex-NKP line not far away on the south side, past Fairview (MP 97.8), crossovers at CP 97 (MP 97.5), a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, two grade crossings, an airstrip on the north side, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over drainage, a spur to industry, a road bridge overhead, a signal bridge, crossovers at CP 89 (MP 89.7), where the speed limit drops to 60-50, a grade crossing, a spur heading away north, MP 89, a grade crossing, dual road bridges overhead, detectors at "Erie" (MP 88.7), and two grade crossings in town.

There are (or once were) connections on the north side down to the grain elevators at the harbor on the lake shore, derelict factories on the north side of the line, a (former?) Bessemer & Lake Erie crossing from the ex-NKP line (is this now combined with the former NYC line through town?) to a two track B&LE yard on the north side of the line, two bridges over streets, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge at MP 87.x, extra track on the north side, a bridge over a street, an island platform with umbrella shed at the passenger station at Erie (MP 86.9), two road bridges overhead, a former PRR line to the harbor bridging overhead, a derelict factory on the north side, a bridge over a street, a signal bridge, crossovers at CP 85 (MP 85.6), where the speed limit reverts to 79-70-60-50 and a  33,264 ft. siding on the south side of the begins, a road bridge overhead, two spurs trailing in on the north side, a spur heading away on the north side, , a road bridge overhead, the GE locomotive test track and GE Locomotive Works on the north side of the line, with the test track continuing east of the plant, with overhead catenary, Intermediate Signals on a signal bridge at MP 83.x, a bridge over a street, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, and the plant connecting to the main line at Harbor Creek (MP 79.2), with a connection over to the ex-NKP at the same point.

The 33,264 ft. siding on the south side of the line ends at the crossovers at CP 79 (MP 79.0), which  is followed by a bridge over drainage, four grade crossings in open fields, detectors at "Northeast" (MP 75.1), Intermediate Signals (MP 75.x), a grade crossing, crossovers at CP 73 (MP 73.3), extra track on the north side, a bridge over a stream, a railroad museum on the north side at Northeast (MP 73.0), where the depot on the north side is part of the museum, two grade crossings in town, MP 71, where freight speeds fall to 65-55-50, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals at MP 70.x, a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, dual road bridges overhead (I-90), the NY-PA State Line (MP 68.4), where the line enters New York State, two grade crossings, detectors at "Ripley" (MP 68.2), where passenger speed fall to 70 mph as far as MP 67.5, Intermediate Signals (MP 68.x), three grade crossings, reverting to 79 mph to the signals at CP 66 (MP 66.0), and falling to 75 mph thereafter, three grade crossings in town, Ripley (MP 65.3), three grade crossings, a cemetery on the north side, a dirt road grade crossing, signals at CP 63 (MP 63.8), where freight speeds are 55-50, resuming 70-60-50 thereafter, an angled road bridge overhead, Intermediate Signals (MP 61.x), a grade crossing, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, and bracket signals and crossovers at CP 58 (MP 58.2), where a 10,560 ft. siding on the south side starts.

There is a grade crossing, a road bridge overhead, Westfield (MP 57.5), a spur trailing in on the north side, MP 57, signals at CP 56 (MP 56.2), where the siding ends, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, MP 55, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals (MP 55.x), a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals (MP 53.x), Intermediate Signals (MP 51.x), four grade crossings, signals at CP 49 (MP 50.0), where freight speed drop to 70-50 for the next mile, resuming 70-60-50 thereafter, a grade crossing, a derelict factory on the north side, detectors at Brocton (MP 49.3), a bridge over a river, Intermediate Signals (MP 48.x), road bridges overhead, a crossover at CP 47 (MP 47.2), two grade crossings, MP 45.4, where passenger speeds rise to 79 mph again, a grade crossing, MP 45, a grade crossing, Intermediate Signals (MP 44.x), MP 44, a bridge over drainage, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, returning to 75 mph at MP 43, and detectors at "Dunkirk" (MP 42.6).

There is a crossover at CP 42 (MP 42.0), where a siding starts on the north side and passenger speeds rise to 79 mph, four bridges over roads, a platform in the middle of the line, an old tower on the north side, Dunkirk (MP 40.3), where a spur from Fredonia trails in from the south and there was once a flat crossing with the ex-NKP line, a grade crossing, a spur curving away north to industry, crossovers at CP 39 (MP 40.1), where passenger speeds fall to 70 mph and 12,000 ft. sidings start on both the north (track continuing from further west) and south sides, MP 38.8, where passenger speed of 79 mph resumes, Intermediate Signals at MP 38.x, a grade crossing, a dirt track grade crossing, crossovers at CP 37 (MP 37.0), where both sidings end, two dirt track grade crossings, a road bridge overhead, a bridge over drainage, Intermediate Signals (MP 34.x), MP 33, where freight speeds fall to 70-55-50 for the next mile, Silver Creek (MP 31.4), where there is a 6,900 ft. siding on the south side, a bridge over a river, Lake Erie alongside to the north, crossovers at CP 31 (MP 30.8), where passenger speeds fall to 75 mph, a grade crossing, detectors at "Irving" (MP 28.9), a bridge over a stream, Intermediate Signals at MP 28.3, where passenger speeds revert to 79 mph, a through girder bridge over a river, MP 28, and Irving (MP 27.0), where the ex-NKP once crossed at grade again, and the lines turn northeast.

The line passes two bridges over roads, a bridge over a stream, MP 25, Intermediate Signals (MP 24.x), Farnham, a grade crossing, a crossover at CP 23 (MP 23.0), Intermediate Signals at Angola (MP 21.4), a road alongside to the north, a grade crossing in town, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, the road alongside turning away north, detectors at "Angola" (MP 19.0), Intermediate Signals (18.x) just east of the detector, a grade crossing, MP 18, where freight speeds fall to 70-55-50, Intermediate Signals (MP 17.x), a road bridge overhead, crossovers at CP 15 (MP 15.5), where a siding starts on the north side, a bridge over a stream, a grade crossing, North Evans, Intermediate Signals (MP 13.x), Intermediate Signals (MP 11.x), Shaleton, two grade crossings, a bridge over drainage, detectors at "Bayview" (MP 10.2), a bridge over a road, a signal bridge, a grade crossing, and Intermediate Signals at Bayview (MP 8.0), where the line turns north-northeast and speed limits become 79-50.

There is a yard alongside to the northwest, a road bridge overhead, a grade crossing, a street alongside to the west, a former "Botech" plant to the west of it, with some tracks serving it, crossovers at CP 5 (MP 5.4), a former wye on the east side with a former Buffalo bypass line passing the city on the southeast side directly to Depew Station, as the line turns north, a yard to the west, a signal bridge, a four-track intermodal yard to the west, a multi-span through truss road bridge overhead (Tifft Street), a through truss bridge carrying the former PRR/Lehigh Valley link to the South Buffalo's Lackawanna Transfer Yard, with Bethlehem Steel's Lackawanna Works beyond that on the lake shore, Intermediate Signals (MP 3.x), a road bridge overhead, the remains of the ex-NYC Seneca Yard just west of the main line and east of the SB yard, the north end of Seneca Yard (MP 2.2), a signal bridge, crossovers at CP 2 (MP 2.1), where the speed limit drops to 30 mph, the SB line crosses the ex-NYC and adjacent ex-NKP at grade and various local connectors depart, extra track on the west side as the main line edges east, and CP-Draw (MP 1.7), where many more connectors depart, including those with the Buffalo & Pittsburgh on the east side, and into the extensive lake port at Buffalo on the west side.

There are (or were) more flat crossings on both sides of the river, over which the main line bridges on a through truss bridge, a line bridges overhead, there are 12 yard tracks to the west, Park Avenue, Elk Street, I-190 and Seneca Street road bridges overhead, and a single lead from the yard trailing in on the west side, before the line reaches the wye whose west apex is at Carroll Street, but at which the main line turns east, (MP 0.0), with a bridge over a street, crossovers, and a bridge over a street before reaching the east apex of the wye.
