Afton to Nichols/Springfield

From the junction with the line north to Edwards and Fort Scott, at Afton Junction (MP 347.6), the Springfield line continues east-northeast, Two Main Tracks, CTC, speed limit 60 mph (but a local 25 mph speed restriction on Track 1), past East Afton (MP 346.4), where single track, CTC, resumes, Oseuma, a detector at MP 343.3, the 6,939 ft. north side siding (20 mph on this and all other siding turnouts) at Farland (MP 340.6), where there is a dual-ended spur for the Simmons Elevator and was once a flat crossing with the erstwhile Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf, and Prairie City, turning northeast and then east, bridging over an arm of the Grand Lake of the Cerokee with a 45 mph speed restriction from MP 338.0 to MP 337.3, and turning east-northeast past the 7,084 ft. south side siding (10 mph on the siding) at Wyandotte (MP 332.9).

The line turns east and then northeast, with a 45 mph speed restriction from MP 331.7 to MP 330.9, east past the border between Oklahoma and Missouri, northeast past a 45 mph head-end speed restriction from MP 326.0 to MP 325.0, through Seneca (MP 325.4), and the 5,983 ft. south side siding at Racine (MP 319.2), turning southeast past Belfast and a detector at MP 314.6, just north of due east, with a 55 mph speed restriction from MP 314.3 to MP 313.1, past an east-facing spur for Ragland Mills (MP 313.0) and a 35 mph speed restriction from MP 313.1 to MP 309.1, turning just east of due north past Neosho (MP 309.8), northeast past the flat crossing with the KCS at MP 309.2, a 45 mph speed restriction from MP 309.1 to MP 286.5, after which full line speeds prevail, and the 5,696 ft. north side siding at Jeff (MP 308.5), curvily east-northeast and then curvily east past Granby, the 6,450 ft. north side siding at Ritchey (MP 297.2), and Berwick.

There is a 9,240 ft. south side siding and junction with an out-of-service former Frisco line trailing in on the north side, at Pierce (MP 286.9), a turn east-southeast, a detector at MP 284.7, a turn just north of due east, a 50 mph speed restriction for westward trains between MP 283.9 and MP 283.8, a 45 mph speed restriction for eastward trains from MP 283.2 to MP 282.6, the start (25 mph on the turnout to Main 2) of Two Main Tracks, CTC, at Lou (MP 282.6), a 45 mph speed restriction from MP 282.6 to MP 279.1, the junction with the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad (former Frisco) heading away on the north side at CD Junction (MP 282.2), Monett (MP 282.0), a crossover (20 mph on the crossover) at Crossover M (MP 281.0), where the line turns curvily east, and Globe (MP 279.1), where single track, CTC, resumes.

The line turns curvily northeast, with a 50 mph speed restriction from MP 274.9 to MP 273.0, north-northeast past the 8,145 ft. north side siding at Verona (MP 273.7), where there is an east-facing spur for Syntex, east past a 40 mph speed restriction from MP 269.3 to MP 268.7, the flat crossing with the Missouri & North Arkansas Railroad (which then turns alongside to the south) at MP 269.0, the 7,039 ft. north side siding at Aurora (MP 268.9), a 45 mph speed restriction for westward trains between MP 268.7 and MP 267.4, where the M&NA turns away south (to head for Branson and beyond), with the BNSF line turning just north of due east, northeast with a 45 mph speed restriction from MP 264.4 to MP 263.5 past Marionville, the 7,804 ft. south side siding at Logan (MP 262.3), a detector at MP 260.9, a 45 mph head-end speed restriction for westward trains at MP 260.5, a west-facing spur for Stark Lbr (MP 257.5), and the 6,584 ft. north side siding at Billings (MP 257.3).

There is a 55 mph speed restriction from MP 255.5 to MP 255.2, a 45 mph speed restriction from MP 252.2 to MP 250.1, the 8,489 ft. south side siding at Republic (MP 251.8), a turn east-northeast, a turn north-northeast, the 6,857 ft. south side siding at Brookline (MP 247.2), where there is an east-facing spur for the Southwest Power Plant, on the east side, a turn east-northeast, an east-facing spur at Payless Spur (MP 242.0), and the junction with the former Frisco line from Kansas City to Memphis, trailing in from the west at Nichols (MP 241.7), where the speed limit is 20 mph and Two Main Tracks, Yard Limits start, the remaining spur into the center of Springfield (where the passenger station was) heads east and all through traffic uses the line past Springfield Yard (MP 238.7) on the St. Louis line, heading east-northeast.
