West Yard to Rock Creek Junction

From the crossovers at West Yard (MP 6.4), where the line curves around to just south of due east, the speed limit falls to 40 mph and the Kansas sub. starts to overlap with the UP Kansas City Terminal sub., the latter heads east-southeast, still following the Kansas (Kaw) River,  Two Main Tracks, CTC, speed limit 40 mph, with the two tracks separating, the north one the original UP and the south one the former Rock Island, past crossovers and spurs on the south side at Kaw Junction (MP 5.0), 18th Street Yard (original UP) on the north side, a curving bridge carrying a Kansas City terminal line overhead, crossovers and the east end of the yard on the north side at 18th Street (MP 3.7), which is also the west end of the yard on the south side at Armourdale Yard (former Rock Island).

There are crossovers at Terminal Junction (MP 3.3), where a connector to the Kansas City Terminal Railroad's Hi Line to State Line Junction splits off south of the north track(s) and north of the south track and Armstrong Yard begins on the south side of the north track(s), as the line turns east-northeast, a connection turning away north to North Cypress Junction on the KCT, a bridge carrying the KCT Hi Line overhead, a connection trailing in from North Cypress Junction on the KCT, two connection from the east end of Armstrong Yard south to the KCT Hi-Line  and (once) to the east end of Armourdale Yard, a connection trailing on in the north side from the KCT Cypress Yard and on the south side from the Hi Line at Kaw Tower (MP 1.8), east end of Armstrong Yard, the bridge over the Kansas River, and once over the erstwhile Kansas City Southern line on the west (north) bank and the erstwhile Kansas City Connecting Railroad on the east (south) bank, the yard at Kaw Bridge (MP 1.6), where a KCC line once trailed in on the north side, and ownership was once vested in the Missouri Pacific rather than the original UP, crossovers and junction with a connector on the southeast side to Union Avenue on the KCT, at Hickory Street (MP 1.1), where a KCT line once trailed in on the northwest side, a former crossing with the erstwhile Kansas City & Kaw Valley line to its 8th & Grand terminal, and a former crossing with the erstwhile Chicago Great Western line north from KCT's 12th Street Yard.

The line turns northeast adjacent to KCT's 5th Street, past a former flat crossing with a erstwhile KCT line between CGW's erstwhile Ohio Avenue Yard and KCT's 3rd Street Yard, crossovers at Broadway (MP 0.0/283.0), junction with another former MoPac line trailing in on the north side, where the speed limit is 15 mph and the line turns just north of due east along the south bank of the Missouri River, and then east, away from the river, to ASB Junction (MP 282.4), where the 2MT line to Rock Creek Junction via Manchester separates, on the south side, from the 2MT line via Lydia Avenue, which also has connections to Rock Creek Junction.

Via Manchester

Tracks 1 and 2, speed limit 40 mph, 2MT, CTC, head east from ASB Junction (MP 282.4), past the acute angled flat crossing with the KCT at Gillis Street (MP 282.1), and crossovers at KCT Troost (MP 281.8), where a connector from the ASB Bridge trails in on the north side, and then just north of due east past the yard at Neff Yard (MP 279.0), on the north side of the line, where it turns east, crossovers at Manchester (MP 278.9), near the east end of the yard and junction with the former MoPac  line to Sheffield and  Leeds Junction, which departs (2MT) on the north side of the line to Rock Creek Junction that here reduces to single track, CTC, a turn just south of due east and climb over the Sheep Jump (MP 278.00, which bridges over the top of the lines south to Leeds Junction, to a junction with the line via Lydia Avenue, trailing in from the north-northwest.

Via Lydia Avenue

Tracks 3 and 4, speed limit still 15 mph, continue just north of due east, 2MT, CTC, past crossovers at Troost Avenue (MP 282.0), acute angle flat crossing with the KCT and with a line coming off the ASB Bridge to the north, and junction with a connector on the south side back to the other line at KCT Troost, crossovers at Lydia Avenue (MP 281.7), junction with a line coming off the ASB bridge on the north side, where the speed limit rises to 20 mph, a turn to the east at the west end of the yard at Neff Yard (MP 279.0) on the south side of the line, and Southwest Junction (MP 278.2), where the 2MT reduce to two single track lines, one turning south, under the Sheep Jump, to the line to Leeds Junction, and one heading east, with speed limit 30 mph, past a flat crossing with a line headed north to Birmingham and Liberty, a connector from the Leeds Junction line trailing in on the south side, to join with the line via Manchester trailing in on the south side, from the west.

Together Again

As the line heads east, there is a connector from Sheffield Junction on the KCT line past KC Union Station, trailing in on the south side, and the line passes under a flyover carrying the BNSF (former Santa Fe) line from Kansas City to Chicago over the top of the UP line, and then passes crossovers at CP K 277 (MP 277.0), where the Gateway Western (former Chicago & Alton) and UP (former MoPac) lines to Independence and St. Louis turn away on the south side, and turns east-northeast to Rock Creek Junction (MP 276.8), where the line trails in on the south side of the former Santa Fe line to Chicago.
